You can watch it live now at

The following match should be live very soon:
Ilija Lupulesku (USA) vs Gergely Urban (HUN)

Gergely Urban is a coach at the Barnet Table Tennis Centre in Barnet, UK. Used to be a high-ranked hungarian player. I know him personally - having attended some of his weekend coaching sessions. He's a very nice person, and a great coach, not to mention of of the top players in senior british league.

Go Urfi!

Yeah, Lupulesku played very well.  I wonder if Urfi's strategy of using BH flicks/punches into Ilya's FH was the right one ...

Interesting. Never seen this before.
What type of racket they are using?
I heard in an interview that topspin becomes backspin in this ping pong.

Sandpaper - these surfaces do not invert topspin like inverted rubber does.
I like putting heavy topspin on the ball...

The semis are almost determined. One: Maxim Shmyrev (defending champion) plays Ilija Lupulesku (USA(, and in the other one Sule Olaleye (Nigeria) will play the winner of QF (goes live right now) between Chris Doran and Martin Groenewold (NED).

Interesting that both superstars from Philippines - Gonzales and Cruz - were defeated in QF by Lupulesku (very close tough match 2-1 with 11-9 in the end) and Shmyrev (2-0, without problems). Shmyrev also defeated another Philipino player Peter Cua in 1/32.

Doran won the QF (very close two sets), so he is going to semis vs Nigerian.

Yes, I cannot watch anymore. I watched two QFs and now all the links are blocked. WTH?

I only know that Shmyrev beat Lupulesku 2-0 (11-5, 13-11) and goes to the final.

I thought these events play using old fashioned 21 points.
Didn't realize it going on now! I try to watch hopefully one of the links work!

Also, one of the Russian players at the  tournament (Dmitry Popov, advanced from group, got eliminated in 1/32) mentioned that he recorded Maxim's last three matches (QF vs Cruz, SF vs Lupulesku, F vs Olaleye) and hopefully they will be soon posted on YouTube.

Actually more of interest would be challenge matches between Russian Tryouts (for WCPP) winners and Shmyrev (who defeated them relatively easily):

Although he is using sandpaper, watching Maxim play makes me consider switching to full-time hardbat.

Could you or someone who speaks Russian write what the gist of video is and what Shmyryov is saying? Thanks.

A little bit biased material and marginal comments like Tradition vs Progress, where tradition is represented by sandpaper hardbat and allegedly greater skill, while progress is seen as only technological (tensor rubbers and composite blades). The final verdict is that Technology wins over TT skills. This conclusion is supported by infrared markers that show who has better moves. When starting to lose Shmyryov gets suspicious that Lakeev used speed glue. Wink
