Hi,
Just observed a commercial on television in which one of the endorsers is Dr. Michael Lardon, M.D. The endorsed product is Super Beets Chews. This Dr. Lardon was one of the top U.S. table tennis players some decades ago, now in San Diego, California and a professor in the California University System. He was the gracious host of myself and Stellan Bengtsson some many years ago, a wonderful person who is the acclaimed author of an important book contribution to sports psychology, Finding Your Zone. Thanks.

I remember Mike Lardon from way way back. He was a very good player. Here is a pretty good independent summary of the product itself. There is a rational basis to it, even if the product itself has not been independently tested to prove that it recapitulates the effects of actual beet juice. It definitely seems pricey. |

By the way, in principle you might get a similar effect with something like Viagra. It has actually been tested in cyclists. It conferred no protective advantage except at high altitudes (those kinds of drugs are actually used in treatment if high altitude sickness). On the other hand, nitrates (the active ingredient in beets) might produce a more global effect and so might have a bit more performance advantage in certain sports (probably not table tennis, though). Which brings up another thing, if you actually use Viagra or related drugs (Cialis, Stendra, etc. etc.) for erectile dysfunction you don't want to use this supplement. Nitrates are very much counterindicated in people taking those drugs and it could be quite dangerous.
