Watched Lily vs Cheng Meng  1/4 final at

Lily often used a serve that initially looked like a Fh pendulum.
But well before contact you could see the racket tip was straight down and slightly tilted backward.  The face of the racket was parallel to the table end (perpendicular to serving direction)  so she could only hit the back of the ball.  At contact she seemed to be kind of flipping the tip forward and then lifting up with whole arm.  Look at her first 2 serves in particular.

From my impressions this could only be a topspin serve with no variations.  I am not good at figuring this kind of thing out so I am interested if there are variations she was using or not.  Also what are the plus minus of this serve?   It just seems different from anyone else I have watched serve.

First two serves are FH pendulum serves. Lily also has the heavy underspin/no spin variant using a very similar motion. Towards the end she also served a lot of sidetopspin hook serves with the racket tip pointed downward.

You can serve heavy underspin even if you contact the back of the ball with the bat pointing down as long as you're brushing downwards. It's key to deception at a higher level - you serve with almost exactly the same blade angle, just change the direction of the wrist acceleration (with of course different arm movements to disguise that wrist acceleration).

Check out 2:00 and 2:19.  Serve motion  just seems so different from Cheng Meng who is mostly doing what I recognize as Fh pendulum.  Maybe difference is Cheng is using mostly side and side under while Lily is hitting mostly top with that motion.  At least I think it is top at 2:00 and 2:19.

Yeah those are sidetopspin FH pendulum serves. I would agree she didn't have very elaborate disguises for that... This serve basically has a brief period in front where the racket angle is flatter, if the ball was contacted during this phase it'll be sideunderspin rather than sidetopspin...

mjamja there's no need to work on new serves for you lol, you already can serve so many!

For me I stopped working on new serve movements already because of the same reason. Quality of existing serves (placement precision, reliability, spin variation) are more important imo....

I personally did a count of service action sets recently and I had two types of FH pendulum, one heavy under/nospin, one reverse pendulum, three types of hook serves (one with bat pointing up, one horizontal and one downwards), with a total of 7 movements, there's already too many to maintain haha...

The ones at 2:00 and 2:19 are quasi-kick-serves, loaded with side-topspin. Lily has a short backswing when serving that makes her motion a little awkward looking.
