I've heard a lot of people taking Dawei's sponges and putting it under various topsheets with some (at least from the comments) fantastic results.
1. What are the characteristics of their sponges? 2. What topsheets are durable and lightly tacky/very grippy that go well with those sponges? |

Cole Ely glued a Palio CJ8000 topsheet (the thinnest one, I think it was "C") onto a sheet of Dawei Butter for me some time back. Very sweet! Good control, long dwell, great spin. Better for backhand since it had a tendency to bottom on hard forehand smashes. My training partner uses it on his backhand with great results. Has lasted a long time. Reminded me of Donic Desto F3 Big Slam, but a little slower and without the glue sound.

you hear about dawei sponges and diff topsheets because of cole, who is among few of the distributors who would take the effort of making different combinations for you.
truly i don't think there is anything special in dawei sponges... moreover their hardness ratings are inconsistent. they are definitely not the kind of sponges that you get from esn factory or tenergy factory or the other japanese factory that makes boost, calibra, coppa speed rubbers. i used to use dawei and other sponeg combinations long time back when esn rubbers used to cost 45 dollars +. but then when esn 4th generation rubbers and 5th generation rubbers from palio and ttnpp started costing $30... i found its futile to practice alchemy with sponges and rubbers.. whatever sponge you want , whatever rubber you want you can pick and choose among the standard rubbers.... and also get the new generation speed-glue effect rubbers from above mentioned factories. |

While I agree that the dawei sponges aren't as good as those mentioned, I do think they're substantially better than any other sponges made in china or any supposedly japanese sponges carried by chinese companies in the chinese price bracket. And I'm sorry that you got a batch that was mismarked. I know that you did. Making it worse, you used the thinnest palio top which maximizes how much you feel any variation.
You know I respect you deb and I know you speak the truth from your experiences, but I gotta respond. I still think in the sub $20 market there's no comparison. And you're still comparing rubbers that are $30 with rubbers that are $16 or less. Edited by cole_ely - 03/22/2011 at 11:01am |

those dawei sponges are great for pips out players looking to customize their favorite pips to fit different blades.
i know one short pips player who uses 802 with 35degree 1.8 on his stiga supercarbon and 802 with 30degree 1.5 on his schlager carbon. same topsheet, just different sponge densities/thickness to provide the exact feel you are looking for. |

I have to say that cole's job of gluing the topsheet to the sponge is top notch and for 15 dollars a rubber it beats any other chinese rubber of the same price in terms of playability.
