Where are the rules for qualifying posted?  It seems that they run the tournament 4 times over and see who makes it in....

Yes, Angela is good. A couple more years she could be easily a top-5 player in the country.

The commentator is a bit lackluster, isn't he?

I don't feel his ramblings add anything of value. It's more of a play-by-play nonsense.

"Shot missed the table there... 3-4."

"She served long and returned it... 5-7."

Oh well! LOL

Some nice matches. Yes, the commentator was too busy talking about another match more than the one that was being streamed. At one point, he said if you have 2 monitors put the other match on!

Jim Butler (2557) v. Billy Ding (2363) will be interesting. Billy seems to be the underdog on paper but he beat before people over 2600 (Hazinski, at the 2012 US Nationals) and seems underrated at the moment; besides that he is really good when facing a challenge and his composure in important matches is stronger than average: stress and pressure will make him play better unlike typical players, making him the ideal national team player imho.
I bet on him; any taker? Big smile

Man I'm getting old. I remember seeing Jim play back in US Opens and Nationals back in the 80"s and now I play Billy in the club on a regular basis.

I am a bit surprised by the results. I was pretty sure Kanak would make it.

So, as far as I understood the men's team is: Timothy Wang, Adam Hugh, Yahao Zhang, Jim Butler and Billy Xu Ding as first alternate.

Women's team is: Lily Zhang, Prachi Jha, Crystal Wang, Erica Wu and Judy Hugh as first alternate.

Congrats to Jimmy and all the others!

There are 5 spots on the team.  The fifth spot is a coach's pick. Kanak should get that. Billy will make it if someone else can't play, which will only happen if Jim Butler pulls out, IMO.

Judy Hugh might get the coach's pick, but I think it should ideally go to Ariel Hsing or Angela Guam.

The umpire obviously messes up here, Corey tries to point out it should be his serve but I'm assuming based on the umpire's attitude Corey doesn't push the issue.

lol @ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nPYE23dvUMc#t=2h32m40s

Wonder what the protocol is when the umpire clearly messes up. They're obviously not going to replay the match, but it does seem a bit unfair to Corey.

Why did Corey get a yellow/Red card at the end of the match?

for swearing out loud, I believe. But the mistake Meier did afterwards it's such ridiculous. Listening to him bragging about being an international umpire all the time and then seeing this error? What a  tool

Why does Kanak get picked over Billy? Clearly Billy did better than Kanak in the trial out?

seems to me, this format - 3 consecutive tournaments, was kind of confusing, and provides mixed results and limited information

the humongous giant round robin, to me, is a clearer indicator of who eventual winners would and should be.....

I just watched the interview with Jimmy Butler right after he beat Billy Ding and consequently made the National Team. Seeing his emotional reaction, talking about his hard battle back from severe physical injury, was really touching. I don't know the guy, but he sure came across in this interview as someone to root for.
Big congrats, Jim. Smile

PS: In case you want to see the interview I'm referring to, here's a link:

How so?  Kanak got to the final match on the first day, but lost to the same short pimples backhand guy (Shao Yu) twice after making the final match on the first day.  How does Billy "clearly" outperform that if he supposedly does?
Kanak has beaten at least two of the people who qualified and is out most promising junior today.  If we are thinking long term for the US, he is the pick.  Billy would not be a bad pick, but as things stand, he is not more talented nor does he have greater achievements/potential than Kanak.

Yes, Angela is improved a lot. practice with her few months ago, very spinny when she chop. I hope she can keep this momentum, but IMO chopper just getting little differcult in high level.
