U.S. national team for 2014.  Ariel was picked because only top four finishers are guaranteed a spot at the trials, with the fifth spot (for the Worlds Championships only, not any other international event for 2014) being the coach's decision to pick whoever he feels to be the best for the team.

Has Ariel's pick being announced anywhere?  Trying to find any news sources with this info.

If Ariel had wanted to play the Worlds she would have played the Trials.

I have no idea why Ariel didn't go to the trials, I don't know her and have never spoken to her.  However it's not too difficult to imagine reasons why someone (especially a university student) might want to play in the Worlds but for perfectly legitimate reasons might not be able to play at the trials.  Like I said, I don't claim any knowledge about people I don't know, and it is also possible to imagine she really doesn't want to go.

Should Ariel get the coach's pick to go?  It kind of seems like a no-brainer to me (meaning if I was coach, that's who I would pick). Maybe they asked her and she said she really doesn't want to go, or can't go given her studies.

Someone who goes by vze23 at another forum says Ariel is skipping the Worlds because of conflicts with school.

I guess it becomes difficult to maintain world class level of playing without being able to practice full time. I know some former national players who don't play at all because they are not able to perform at their best level.

Ariel can qualify for the National team with her current level (training at Lily Yip on the weekend as necessary) - after all, she won the Nationals on that schedule.  Ariel is saying that she doesn't want to miss school for the length that the championship would require.  This is different from saying that she doesn't think she can make it.
