    Posted: 04/07/2015 at 2:07am
I read on Btyonline.com  that Viscaria has a Balsa core while I always thought and researched on other sites that the blade has a Kiri core.  So which one is it?  Could it be that Butterfly changed the Kiri core to a Balsa core in these new production models hence them being so light in weight?

Btyonline:

  • Combines Arylate fiber features of lightness, flexibility, and shock absorption with the Carbon fiber features of high elasticity and minimal dissipation of energy.
  • Koto outer plies & Balsa core.
  • Viscaria's compact head size makes it ideal for quick re-looping right off the bounce.

Other site:

Butterfly Viscaria 7 90 5.8 Koto Arylate-Carbon (ALC) Limba Kiri Limba Arylate-Carbon (ALC) Koto

Yeah you are right. The new ones are said to be faster. Balsa would do that , compared to the old kiri.

Plus lighter weight due to balsa.

Nice find.

I've played with the new Viscarias and they don't feel like balsa.  Feels like kiri
When I played with a balsa blade, it definitely feels like a balsa.

What have others experienced ?

This is quite something.  I am very tempted to buy one to find out.

It's kiri, always has been, always will be (probably) .

IMO, the balsa core thing was a mistake by a website many years ago and has been repeated ad infinitum since then.
This was a great signature until I realised it was overrated.

Not only is it true, it's also a total guess! :-)

I don't really know mate (about the misinformation), but it's not balsa. If the Viscaria has a balsa core, so does every other kiri core blade because they all look and feel pretty much the same. Whereas a balsa core is unmistakably balsa - soft and very easy to compress with a fingernail.

It doesn't rule out a special kind of balsa which is made to imitate kiri I suppose. But that's a stretch.
This was a great signature until I realised it was overrated.

In my opinion, i has alway been kiri because the old viscaria will not be heavy if the core were balsa. Like what andysmith stated, it was a mistake that never been corrected. I have seen several bty blades with typo that they never fixed.

Perfomance instead performance ... balsa instead of kiri ... quite a lot of mistakes for one blade.
Maybe they purely change the recipe from one stage.
