Was on wikipedia reading about Rubber cement and stumbled upon a water/ammonia based rubber cement called COPYDEX used in the UK. I know it's not ITTF approved, but it's an alternative to solvent based glues.

Interesting post. Can anyone here with the knowledge on the subject explain how water based glue is supposed to give a speed glue effect, when the effect is caused by the solvent? Can this be easily replicated at home, like you can mix your own speed glue? I think the table tennis companies are ripping people off with this new water glue.

You probably wouldn't have many people who want to sit with you if your bat smells of ammonia.

It's not a speed glue, so you would only apply it once. By then there won't be an ammonia smell. A 125mL Bottle of Copydex goes for 8.25 US dollars. |

The ITTF site says you can still use your usual glue but leave it 72 hours in open to dry to get rid of VOC before your game. If you are not looking for speed-glue effect, you might as well stay with your usual glue.

I think they're talking about new sheets of rubber, blades etc. not airing it out after you speed glue it. Here's what they wrote: "The ITTF is aware that manufacturers need to use glue for several components of the table tennis racket. This is an application of glue at the manufacturing level. It is, therefore, the responsibility of the manufacturers to ensure the safety of their own employees and to follow the national standards in their own country to protect the health and level of exposure of the their employees to harmful volatile compounds. It is also the responsibility of the manufacturers to properly air all their products before packaging to ensure that all existing harmful volatile compounds have evaporated and are not trapped in the packaging." Players "The ITTF will test at events the complete racket as used by the player. It is the responsibility of the players to ensure that their racket is free of harmful volatile compounds. The ITTF will hold the player directly responsible for any failed test and will implement its rules accordingly. Players must ensure that their racket, racket covering, bonding materials, and any other part of their racket are free of any harmful volatile compounds. This can be achieved by properly airing the racket and all its components for up to 72 hours." |

The new new "Tibhar Clean Tuning Extra" has the same effect as regular speed glue. The spin and speed increase is the same - even the sound is the same. It's not a glue but this isn't important. It's voc free and legal. How does it work? I don't know, but this doesn't matter as long as the result is the same. The wording has changed. We no longer glue our rubbers, but we "tune" them once a month and put them on the blade with new voc free contact glues which are very easy to handle and work even better than regular glues. The terminology has changed, the procedures have changed, but the result is the same - and I really mean the same. You didn't expect it, I didn't expect this, but it happened anyways. We don't need no more harmful VOC based solvents to have fun at the table. There are good alternatives on the marked now. Speed glue will be forgotten soon. |

I am still skeptical about the new water-based glue. I do not want to use it because I am afraid that the water will ruin my wooden blade in the long run. Forum members advised me to seal the blade lightly before using water-based glue. I know that sealing my blade lightly probably does not change the feeling and characteristic of my blade, but I never seal my blade and it does not splinter. I will still use current glue but I am afraid that it will be discontinued soon.

My advice : the new water-based glue doesnt damage ur blade at all. But if you think it is abit expensive then stick with 125ml glue butterfly with a bit of ammonia. if u buy 79% concentrate then the smell of the ammonia is very sweet. ive been using the water chack by butterfly but it really doesnt do anything to ur rubber. (speed/soun-wise). But the new Tibhar Clean Tuning Extra is a very gud glue. its faster than i thought. |
