Okay, here's the deal. So I've been playing table tennis for almost 1
year (in a serious manner) now, and I've been talking to my coach about getting a new blade.
I originally started playing with random old blades along with old sheets of rubbers from fellow club members. Today I am currently using a YEO with Bryce Speed (FH) and Tackifire Special Soft (BH). My coach has suggested that I should get one of the following blades: Butterfly - Schlager Carbon Nittaku Tenor Xiom RSM Athena Platinum (Monoply) Here's my dilema, I kind of want them all, however due to budget short falls of being broke I can only get one. I have read reviews on the Schlager Carbon and have played with one before and in ways, I feel like it'll make my game ridiculously fast, however I am afraid I'll loose some control and possibly become a victim of my own speed when balls are returned and I'm out of position. So, Schlager Carbon is at the bottom of what I want. The next blade, the Nittaku Tenor is what I want the most due to the reviews I read on it. However, the only problem is that I have to wait a while for the c-pen version of it to be released. (WooT waiting ) Finally there's the Xiom RSM Athena Platinum. This blade is the one my coach highly insists I get since it'll fit my style of play the best. This blade is ridiculously expensive and from brief addition with completely illicit rounding of numbers, I figured I could get both the Schlager Carbon and Nittaku Tenor for its price... But the thing is this blade does interest me, however there are no reviews. Since it's a one ply I'm afraid I'll break it or something like that... So my questions are: 1. Has anyone played with the Xiom RSM Athena Platinum and has a review of it? 2. What is the needed care for owning a 1 ply blade? Will it snap and break easily? If I hit the edge accidentally will I hate myself forever? Basically how much does it take to split a 1 ply blade? 3. Why should I get a Schlager Carbon/Nittaku Tenor/Xiom RSM Platinum? |

I guess I am kind of wondering what is wrong with the YEO? I am guessing you want more speed? I haven't heard of SC in cpen being a much talked about blade. Tenor isn't available and isn;t RSM blade is a Jpen right? RSM just dropped xiom or xiom just dropped rsm so not sure if that blade will be in production for a long time. (that is the rumor anyway)
I think you should widen your search a bit -- there are a lot of EJs who know their stuff here (maybe even as much as your coach) and if you describe what you are trying to do, and what rubbers you are wanting.... well maybe we (they) can help you. Edit: OIC |

If that is what your coach suggests - you should consider changing the coach. Those are 3 totally different blades, and I see no logic in it. None of those blades should be advised to a developing player that still needs a lot of work on game fundamentals.
I agree with you that Tenor sounds like the most versatile of the 3 though.

Wow those 3 blades are totally different!!!
1. Fast speed demon Carbon Blades 2. Considered fast All wood blades but can't compared with the speed of carbon blades. 3. Speed demon 1 ply Hinoki blade with much better touch and short games than carbon blades. If your previous blade is YEO, then changing to Tenor needs not much adaptation and changing style of play. But if you decided to change your blade to Schlager carbon or 1 ply hinoki, it will takes you more time and change of stroke to master it. |

Well the thing here is with how I play. I currently play a short game and tend to win points based on fast attacks (textbook chinese play), however I understand getting the RSM Athena Platinum since it'll help my style the most. However, the Schlager carbon was suggested since I have the tendency to sometimes stray off the table when I'm being attacked, so in a sense I can keep my speed but be farther back( or looking for treasure as my coach calls it)... However, the Tenor was suggested to me since I have a decent drive, but I never incorporate it in game. So getting it would be exactly the same as I am now, but if I needed to make drives or loops it wouldn't be too difficult with the given blade.
So I really don't know what to get... I kind of want to keep the short game, however in a sense I want to be able to incorporate other strokes in my game... Bleh. As for my coach, I fully trust and respect him. And his dedication with working with me is a great plus, not to mention his credentials in my opinion are highly favorable and awesome. |
