I haven't been able to find what blade weights Ryu Seung-min and Kim Taek-soo played. Anybody have any info? I'm also curious in general what weights one-sided Jpen players prefer.
I have a Xiom Hibi O Pro at 104 grams and TSP Dynam Special 10.0 at 80 grams (way too light, but it's been trimmed for RPB). Last night I tried playing completely one-sided Jpen and it was quite thrilling. Like living on the TT edge, but also more simple mentally not having to think about an RPB backhand. I really did not like how hollow it felt with my Hibi O however. Not very meaty. Funny enough, my usual practice partner said he noticed almost no difference to my normal play which is quite RPB heavy. Now if I could just figure out that damn Korean backhand smash. It's so odd.

I do not remember anything on the other side of their paddle, they played with one rubber only, correct me if that’s wrong. At their level they probably went as heavy as they could and I’d bet on 120g. Even super boosted rubbers were barely approaching 50g at their time and 170g is not heavy..

Yes they only had a FH rubber. My Hibi O with one rubber is 157g and my Special Dynam is 133g. Their blades must have been very heavy. I can't imagine such off the table power even at 170g.

Found some posts saying 98-110g is optimal blade weight. That said, with two rubbers my Hibi O reaches 211g which makes it an absolute cannon.

133 grams? How thick is it 10mm or 10.5?

133 grams with one rubber. The blade is only 80 grams. It is 10mm.

Just for reference, I have a blade actually used by Aubrey Simons (highest WR 3 or 4) a member of the WC English team of the early fifties. That blade weighs approximately 140g.

Unfortunately there is more to finding a fast jpen than just weight. It’s a 100% natural piece of equipment . No glue no composites just a chunk of wood. I would bet money KTS and RSM had a preferred weight and then got to pick blades from a batch. I have quite a few blades and my fastest blade is not the heaviest . Jpen players get obsessed with grain and speed thinking it will make them a better player when we are all probably better off with 9mm blades that have more control.

During the 2012 London Olympics, Ryu Seung Min used a 101g blade. You can do the math by yourself how heavy the racket including a Tenergy 05 is. He still uses the same racket. For KTS, I bet he used a lighter one.

I agree. I've never really obsessed over the grains. When I played one-sided the control was significantly higher, and the balance is different between Special Dynam and Hibi O, but I can't say I play better with one setup over the other. Have you played any of Xiom's Hibi O blades, Jpenmaster? Curious about your thoughts if you have. RSM and KTS's blade weight was more of a curiosity than anything to see what they rocked with.

i own a kts blade which i played with for a while.
it was easily the fastest of the hinoki 1 ply i have owned with a noticeably straight close grain. Also the wood was very much harder than the other blades (which could be dented easily with a thumbnail). |

I compared my two directly with the same rubbers. Switching to the Hibi O Pro, it was clearly slower than the Special Dynam even though it is 24 grams heavier. The Hibi O feels like a wall while the Special Dynam exhibits some flex. The grain on both blades is relatively equal--not completely uniform, tighter grain on one side.
