I believe he's been using MJ ZLC for a long time, he always has this black protective layer around his blade surface. What is it? Is his blade burnt to protect against dings, or some sort of special paint layer?
Or is it just really thin edge tape? (on second thought I think it does look like it)

Yes, this is burnt plastic. M Detrigne also often uses this method to protect the edges of the blades. This is very efficient. He melts the plastic (often black but can be from different colors).
I will try to post a picture tomorrow (now it is too dark in Belgium). Edited by kakapo - 05/27/2017 at 3:09pm |

Interesting! Can us mere mortals get access to this or do it ourselves?

I think he uses some heat gun (this is not a joke) and the plastic melts around the edges but the blade does't suffer from that threatment. After the plastic becomes solid and 100% sticks with the blade. If you hit the table with the edge of your bat, there is nearly no knocks. Of course, he masters this process....I don't know where the plastic in itself comes....

looks just like what I do on most blades.....fit a piece of edge tape on the blade edge only....then glue rubbers......when i move rubbers from blade to blade they dont fit perfect....usually 1-3mm over hang sometimes. So this method helps keep the blade better protected, if you settle in with a set of rubbers that work well..then you can put a wide layer on as normal.

I think so too. It is just BUTTERFLY side tape, black, 6 mm wide. The thinner version because there is a 12 mm side tape that covers the blade side and the rubbers.
