Well, Tie Yana can't be told to lose, because she is not in the mainland Chinese team. So, that's out.. Regarding Zhang Yining tho, she is #1 in the world, and has been for some time. Whenever the #1 Chinese player loses to another Chinese player, I think setup could be suspected, as it is a known tradition, and traditions doesn't go away so easily if I know anything about undergraound traditions of Asian countries. But, ultimately we will not be able to find out for sure, as it would be an utmost secret.
I heard of a setup when Wang Hao was playing Ma Lin at Quarters of WTTC, where Wang Hao loses to Ma Lin to advance Ma Lin to the final because Wang Hao has a record of loss against Ryu SeungMin at the Olympic final, and Ryu was playing well, has beaten Timo Boll in straight games and was taking Wang Liqin to the fifth game in the other quarterfinal match being played at the same time. Had Ryu lost to Wang LiQin in shorter time, Wang Hao might not have had to dump this match. After I heard about this possible setup and watched the video, it seemed apparent that the quarterfinal Wang Hao vs. Ma Lin match was without fire. I could not feel the intense battle of will to win. It seemd like they were just going through motions.
I would not know the truth, but I would not be surprised if the setup tradition still goes on. China and Asia is of a very different culture, heritage and tradition from the western world as we know it.
But, does it really matter?

First of all, Zhang Yining has always had problem dealing with Wang Nan. If Wang Nan plays in internal round robin, she may not do well becuase of her age. But when she plays one on one, especially in a big tournament, she can beat anyone. Secondly, did you notice she has also improved lately? Her backhand has more power and her forehand has a much bigger swing, which translate her shots into more powerful shots. Thirdly, don't ever underestimate the heart of a champion.

To fortunateluck,
I will appreciate if you could delete 'and Asia' from your statement. I, as a Japanese, don't believe Japanese coaches make such a set-up. |

Well, Musashimama, don't get all bent out of shape over a comment that is only an expression of one's opinion. This is just a forum where we say things that people might or might not agree with.
The tradition I was thinking about when I wrote what I wrote was not really about Table Tennis, but all the other traditions. Traditions in general do not change that easily as far as I can see, based on my years of observation. That is all. I am not implying that any Asian country including Japan has a tradition of fixing games at all. I am talking about underground traditions.. like hazing for example .. the things that happen behind the scenes.
Cheers,

Well, Zhang Yining just beat Wang Nan at French Open so apparently she doesn't have a big problem with her...

I am not very proud of that, either.
Though, I'd like to think a bit about this matter. Although they were born in China, at that time they were Japanese players with Japanese nationalities. They themselves decided to nationallize. It might be in order to make their dreams come true. Like Kaii Yoshida, a current member of Japanese national team, who asked Mr. Yoshida (a Japanese club supervisor) to take him to Japan when he was only 14 years old or so, many those Chinese players who immigrated into Japan and got Japanese nationalities were quite happy to be able to be in the Japanese national team. I also have heard of Chire Koyama(He Zhili, a world champion)'s following story : When she was ordered to lose on purpose to Chen Jing (she also immigrated to Taiwan, afterwards ) , she didn't accept it and won to Chen so as to fall into a very bad situation where she had no chance to play as a top Chinese player any longer in her own country. She left China and got married to a Japanese coach and as a Japanese she got opportunity to keep playing at the world top stage. |

thousands civilians in one island to kill themelves by jumping into the
sea or with exposives....

I was born after WW2.
I don't know such a rumor. Japan is now a very, very democratic country. It's not allowed to invade or harm human right in Japan. I think no one dare order a player to lose for purpose. |
