at the top level women's game, they are taking quicker shots, earlier off the bounce and not engaging in counterloop rallies as often nor from as far away. in those scenarios i would think that the increased feel of wood is a big plus... and they simply don't need the extra speed for play that close to the table, in fact, the extra speed provided by composites could result in a lack of precision when playing that close...

Well said icontek Clap.  The pro women are all about close to the table play and rely more on placement, spin and control than speed.

the reason li jia wei plays with carbon is that she plays with pips and the fast stiff blades make the pips work better to offset the incoming spin and giving a flatter ball to avoid being attacked.

nicefrog, how would you compare that blade to a primorac carbon or a clipper cr, way faster?

my point is, it is probably not that easy to admit that for the male pride that lies  inside...
but I think most amateurs are closer to women's pro game than to men's pro game.

Jörgen Persson was at our club last week and played around with us and was being trained by Stellan Bengtsson...he still uses a 25+ year old 7 ply blade that is OFF-- by today's standard...when i asked him about faster equipment he immediately assumed i was not fit to play with such equipment due to the difficulty of reaching a consistent and very high level of play...  in actual fact most player change handles and most of them still use their old wood blades that look like some newer blades...and i am talking about top 50 men in the world...don't be fooled by appearance and handles

If i see him again i will ask him, since you are so good why don't you use a very fast and superior composite blade...he has the luxury to train and use it to improve his game ...if it actually does improve his game?

Faster than those, it's a fairly solid and thick Hinoki on Carbon blade, I haven't used a Schlager carbon but I'd expect it to be very similar to that (I have a Galaxy T1 here and it has about the same outright speed but the TSP Hino Carbon having a much thicker outer ply feels much nicer and doesn't go PING like the T1 does :) ). Anyway it's much too fast for me unless I stand back a few meters, but I play close to the table loop so in general it doesn't work

the composite thing on top players seems to be more like a "young player" choice.
wang liqin, wang hao, ma lin are all using wood....
samsonov doesn't count because supposedly his blade broke.
I guess if you've been playing a whole career with wood it makes no sense to change now.
if you're just starting it's different.

for the record, I have officially changed my blade to avalox p700 today Big smile
burn in hell "timo boll spirit"!!!
