Post wins thread. When a recent British top 50 player came to Maine, one of our US1700-1800 players remarked that he just returned every ball, never seemed to be out of position and didn't use any tricky serves.

Umm.

If you mean "more athletic", perhaps... As in, "you can move faster in a lateral direction'...  But "better footwork" actually means that you can read the point and be in position to return each ball. Players with "better footwork" rarely appear rushed, because they not only understand how to hit the ball, but actually understand the "shape of the rally" and position themselves accordingly.

You can break US1600 with only decent footwork, a push, and a light topspin counter. No looping. No smashing. No deceptive service.

No nothing. Just return the ball one more time than your opponent:

Here's two players that have done just that (both of them have given 1800+ players a hard time, simply by returning the ball and watching the higher ranked player miss during a "HOLLYWOOD shot")

Jossix and Rich unless you can prove to be of a higher league player than APW than you are a pretender too.  Most people don't actualy play table tennis they just pretend to be great players.
