You should look up Cassin. He was the top European junior a year ago and already had a close match against Wang Chuqin in the quarter finals of the junior worlds in Dec 2015. He beat Jin Ueda in the group stage before playing Wang. Don't rely on rankings only, they're not so representative for players who don't play much internationally.

How time flies. How many still remember the thread below? Hung and Tse have stopped competing internationally, while Akkuzu and Cassin are having a blast.

Viscaria FL - 91g

He is still young, can certainly improve.
I am not high on Wang, his unforced error rate is too high...

thwre are always players without being too good that can knock down top players. chuqin struggled the last time he played cassin .remember when chinese coaches said wlq lacked mental strength when he was 19

Very tough opening round for Miu.  The seeding seems strange to me.  Her high ranking should have afforded her a weaker opening round opponent.  Good opportunity for Gu Yuting if she can get past Miu.  No other Chinese in her quarter bracket.

Gu Yuting is unseeded (came from qualification process), it is the drawing that puts her there.

Hirano Miu's coach (and other JNT coaches) sure can plan the strategy as to how to play Gu Yuting.
They have videos of both previous matches to carefully study Gu Yuting.

===========

Reportedly after Hirano Miu beat 3 top Chinese female players, Chinese coaches studied Hirano Miu and gave advice to their top female players.  All those 3 top Chinese female players were able to beat Hirano afterwards.

Btw, Gu's first win over Hirano was before Hirano shocked CNT.
However Gu's second win was after that event.

you make an assumption that all coaches are created equal LOLLOLLOLLOLLOLLOLLOLLOL
I posted this as a comment on another thread: This tournament will show all the results of her new coach's training methods.

Anyway, it is not a big deal to her new coach since he will move back to china later.

Coming up on table 4.

No CNT player will lose to non chinese pip player. If they do, they can kiss their future in CNT goodbye.

That's bit of exaggeration. Ma Long lost to Joo Seehyuk early in his career, you know.
not early, ML was already in Top 10 at WTTC 2007.

This is interesting.  The lowest seeded player is Sofia Polcanova.  Gu Yuting actually has a higher ITTF ranking than Sofia.  However, Sofia is from the host nation, Austria so gets the nod Wink.

Oh well, I guess it's just the luck/unluck of the draw.

Will China manage to win all at this event? I think they can only lose the men's double.

Liu Guodong said after WCT crashed out in the 1st round of the National Games, that their focus was the Asian Cup, that WCT only needed to place in the top 8 to qualify for the World Cup, and that international competitions were their real target.

A moment of silence, please. Since that target is gone now, there is nothing else for him to do for the remainder of the year.

He played exceptionally well at the WTTC, reaching the QF in MS and MD and SF in XD, almost beating the eventual Champion in the MD and going the distance in the XD. I felt he took on too much burden for team Hong Kong, which was later confirmed by LGD in a local newspaper.

People can't really ask too much of him. He didn't turn pro until 18, too late even by European standard. He comes from a grass-root family. He didn't have as much access to quality training. He was not a prospect in the eyes of the HKTTA. I've only recently found out Zheng Puifeng started out late as well and didn't take part in sports school and still made it to the CNT. It's been years and he doesn't even get his fair share of international exposure. What's more, both are penholders. I can't appreciate enough how they struggle and still try their best. I've already seen enough people given up on their dreams.

Ishikawa, women's #1 seed, is in big trouble.
Table 3.

Correction:  Ishikawa is not #1 seed. (Chen Meng is.)
Ishikawa is out.

In the past 12 months, he has lost to Shibaev, Chen weixing, Lee sangsu (twice), Jeong, Pitchford, Li ping, Achanta, Kou Lei, Alamian,
Omar. Most of them are not even top 20 players

It is obvious that his playing style has been worked out by other players.

You mean in the Asian Cup he already made it to the top 8 to qualify for the World Cup? Then why would he even play in the Austrian Open? I don't know what the rest of your post is about. That he overcame great odds for his achievements which are under-appreciated by lots of people? That may true but still irrelevant to what I was talk about.

Ishikawa (#3 seed), Japan's #1 player, can not beat Wang Yidi.
Japan's much lower ranked player, Kato Kyoka beat Wang Yidi (in U21 women).

Isn't that strange.

There is no hatred, just stating the obvious that he is an overated player. Don't think he is as good as his ranking suggests. Basically anyone in the top 70~80 can beat him right now.
