I didn't get to watch this, but that score line looks awful. Aside from playing doubles with Kihara, she'll mostly have a few days off to mentally regroup as she's listed as the last player in the main draw of the Star Contender.

Diaz defeated by the 23 rd Chinese......If they could play each tournament, Chinese female players would be 40 in the top 50...

Gotta hand it to the Chinese. They almost always seem to all end up in the semi finals. But...... Miwa Harimoto and LYJ, future world number ones (world includes China here).

We will see but LYJ, I have serious doubts about it. Miwa Harimoto is just starting so we will know but....once CNT will have studied her game, she will probably be in the bag like Hirano, Ito, Ishikawa and Hayata. Lots of people thought her brother would be n°1 but even if he is still young, i have the feeling that his best performances are behind him.

Europe's last hope, Sofia Polcanova, ousted by Zhang Rui of China. If Miwa can beat FTW, it will be an all China/Japan QF. Go Miwa!

I am not sure but I think Ito Mima won tournaments when she was only 13 but I might be wrong.

Mima Ito won the 2015 ITTF Platinum German Open when she was 14. There were no Chinese there, but the top players outside of China were there.

Miwa Harimoto 3-1 FTW
11:5 13:11 5:4, 5:9, 6:9, 6:10, 9:10 TO for FTW, 10:10, 10:11, 11:11, 11:13(edge by FTW's serve) 11:7 Miwa's shots are loaded with tons of spin, and she doesn't hit on the rise all the time, unlike her many teammates. Edited by zeio - 03/22/2022 at 12:50pm |

Miwa is such a smart player. She knows she has a huge mobility advantage and knows exactly where to target her shots.
This Contender event just goes to show how world rankiing means very little at the moment. Women's World rankings (Edit: I forgot 8 ... DHK), 9 (Diaz), 10 (FTW), 11 (JJH), 12 (CIC), and 13 (Polcanova) don't even make the QF.

Does anyone know what happened to Qian Tianyi? She's listed as walkover in her scheduled match up in her opening round match up with Yang Xiaoxin.

Miwa is paired up with Zhang Rui who she lost 3-4 in the Feeder series. She will be extremely motivated, and I think she will beat her tomorrow.
Miyuu Kihara takes on her compatriot, Miyu Kato. It could go either way, but Kihara has been playing a bit more consistent so she's my pick to win.

Women's WRs 1, 2, 4, & 5 mean a hell of a lot. The other #s, not so much.

On Harimoto's world ranking in 2020, I made a prediction(based on then Elo-rating system) during WTTC 2017. Harimoto happened to comment on his world ranking after Tokyo 2020.

Reporter: In order to meet the Paris Olympics in three years, what are the long-term issues you face? Harimoto: I want to become a more determined player. My grip was not adjusted properly for this Olympic Games. Before the Olympic Games, I had fantasies such as "I hope the draw will be beneficial to me", "I hope to meet an easy opponent" and so on. If I can't take the bad draw for granted next time, I will still lose easily. Because I have participated in the Olympics once, of course I want to participate again. I think I can think more clearly about the competition strategy next time. Although (my) world ranking is very high, I can't necessarily beat players around the 30th, and I haven't beaten top Chinese players at all recently. I think the next 3 years will be the 3 years in order to enter the top 5 in the world for real. Frankly, the Paris Olympics won't be my brightest moment either, but I hope to fill the gap. I hope to do some training that will satisfy my heart. Edited by zeio - 03/22/2022 at 2:43pm |

Would have been nice to see her at the Singapore Smash. However, she did end her international career on a high note by doing well at the Olympics. Interestingly, her only two wins in T-League this season came against FTW.

Oh no, not for Miwa. She will never be world number one before age 18, when she begins attending a prestigious university full time in Japan, with the expectation of doing very well in her studies.

That was an incredible comeback in game 4 for Kihara. I thought she was down even further ... 3-9 maybe? In any case, I remember watching the highlights of the Yang Xiaoxin/Miyu Kato match and YXX almost came back from a huge deficit in the last match so I thought there might be a chance for Kihara even down quite a bit. Great show of mental toughness from Kihara.
