Very rare for Shuiesha, the largest publishing company in Japan, to write about table tennis.

Finally got around to updating the table after ITTF/WTT changed the table format. Also fixed some bugs in MT/WT.

After a dramatic win at WTT CT Zagreb 2023, Hirano hits a winning percentage of ~67% against CNT players this year.

Kihara, ironically, performs consistently the best against non-CNT players and non-teammates and also the worst against CNT players and teammates.

Draw released on 7/20. Instead of seeding with the finishing positions at the Zennoh Cup Hiratsuka, the current player standings were used.

TV Tokyo just uploaded the original footage (though the part where Hirano and Ito were fighting for the middle seat was cut) of the golden generation going to the restaurant £魚臺 after Swedish Open 2017, where Ito and Hayata acknowledged Hirano for always being the last one to leave the training hall.

Looks like JTTA modified the draw procedures again. There was no lottery this time, and they basically used a "Fixed Bracket Draw" based on Current Paris Points Standings.

1st Qtr
(1) Hayata v. Yamamuro (16)
(9) Mori v. Shibata (8)

2nd Qtr
(5) Sato v. Odo (12)
(13) Ando v. Kihara (4)

3rd Qtr
(3) Ito v. I Ayano (14)
(11) Yokoi v. Nagasaki (6)

4th Qtr
(7) M. Harimoto v. Hashimoto (10)
(15) Minagawa v. Hirano (2)

To be fair, this change may have resulted in the most balanced draw among all the Road to Paris Selection Meetings so far. No more "Block of Death" for Hayata who finally gets a decent draw commensurate to her No. 1 Seed. Had the draw been done according to finishing positions from the previous Road to Paris Tournament, the current Top 5 in Paris Points Standings (Hayata, Hirano, Ito, Kihara, and Sato) would all have been drawn in the same half, so JTTA may have also taken this into consideration.

Zennoh Cup Tokyo = when they realize the draw can't be *bleep* up anymore

http://mytabletennis.net/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=91479&PID=1141067
Quote Zennoh Cup Hiratsuka = how to *bleep* up the draw big time

The winner of Lion Cup got a massive advantage in the next draw.
The winner of Zennoh Cup Fukuoka got a massive advantage in the next draw.
The winner of Zennoh Cup Funabashi got a massive disadvantage in the next draw.

Baba: "Any changes will lead to chaos."
JTTA: Keeps making minute changes here and there under the table.

Nagasaki 1-4 Yokoi
Shinozuka 2-1 -> 2-3 -> 4-3 Matsushita

Other than Kihara and Nagasaki, the other R16 matches went as expected. Odo beating Sato, Harimoto beating Hashimoto are not out of the ordinary after Zennoh Cup Hiratsuka and Nojima Cup 2023. Shibata beating Mori is perhaps the only toss-up (Mori 4-0 Shibata at Zennoh Cup Hiratsuka).

Harimoto vs Hirano
511
25, 45, 411
13, 14 TO for Harimoto, 17, 37, 39, 59, 510, 710, 711. Out of options, Harimoto kept serving high-toss long and stole a few points.
03, 63, 68, 78, 79 side edge for Hirano, 710, 910, 911 net for Hirano
Comprehensively suppressed. Serve, receive, FH, BH, speed, spin, power...

Ito vs Yokoi
118
86, 811
31, 32, 42, 44 Ito saved by a stray ball from another court (would've been 45), 74 Ito says Yokoi raised her hand, 84 endline edge for Ito, 104, 105, 115
01, 51, 54, 64, 65, 95, 97, 117
01, 21, 24, 54 TO for Yokoi, 64 edge for Ito, 74, 77, 97, 98, 99 epic BH point for Yokoi, 119

Hayata 4-1 Shibata
Odo 4-1 Ando

Harimoto 1-2 -> 4-2 Uda
711
117
55, 511
20, 24, 74, 76, 86, 87, 98 TO for Harimoto, 108, 1010, 1210
21, 41, 42, 52, 58, 78 TO for Uda, 79, 89, 810 side edge for Uda, 910 epic FH loop from Harimoto, 1010 dead net for Harimoto, 1210
73, 84, 94, 105, 115

Yokotani 2-0 -> 2-1 -> 3-1 -> 3-4 Togami
G3 26, 46 dead net for Yokotani, 49, 89 TO for Togami, 810, 1010, 1012
G4 10, 11, 31, 32, 42, 46, 57, 77, 79, 89, 810, 1210
G5 05, 15, 26, 36, 38, 49, 59, 510, 610, 611
G6 03, 14, 17, 28, 38
G7 10, 12, 23, 33, 34, 45, 65, 66 side edge on serve for Togami, 86, 88, 98, 911
Togami looks lethargic. Injury? Stomachache?

Not certain how much this contributed, but I noticed Kihara was using Butterfly equipment (Viscaria and Impartial XS), which she wasn't using in Ljubljana. Making such a big change in a week or so before a major domestic tournament is an interesting choice. Curious if this is a permanent change that she feels compelled to make (reminds me of Hirano a couple years ago) or is just trying things out.

I'm actually not at all surprised that Yokoi beat Nagasaki.  When the draws came out, I thought Yokoi had a good chance at beating Nagasaki.  Yokoi is known for her strong BH, but her game is very well rounded.  She's not Paris 2024 worthy, but she has a shot at LA 2028.  She's building a name for herself so people now won't be surprised any more when she beats top players.  Remember she beat Mima Ito in a previous domestic tournament.  Though Mima got her revenge here :).

Is it normal for a sponsored player (Kihara by Victas) to switch equipment to another brand? I guess it is lol

It's not that uncommon. Ishikawa and Hirano were both using Butterfly products while sponsored by Nittaku and Stiga, respectively. Some players like Fan Zhendong and Liang Jingkun went to lengths to conceal what they were using (handle swapping), and I'm not sure who decides what is acceptable and what isn't.

Ando takes out Miwa in 7. Ando barely lost when they met at one of the WTT tournaments and even had match points back then.

After WTT CT Zagreb 2023 where Hirano 4-3 SYS, a Tieba user wondered if Hirano has the strongest serve receive outside of CNT. Hirano attributed her win to the improved handling of half-long balls and forcing SYS into BH exchanges.

平野美宇是不是中国之外接发最强的选手

The corner angle at eye level at Zennoh Cup Tokyo makes it rather clear to see.

A big reason Hirano could beat Ding Ning at ATTC 2017 had a lot to do with Hirano handling DN's tomahawk serve well (by bruteforcing with the chiquita) and getting points off her own serve. But since then, the CNT has cracked down on it by forcing her to start from backspin. It has taken Hirano long enough to get past that. Having worked on various parts of her game, the gain on serve receive is now the most obvious and beneficial. At this point, when it comes to receiving, Hirano >= Ito > Hayata. Ito's shortpips have become a double-edge sword in that she can't really do a full-fledged chiquita.

Hayata vs Ito
115
510?, 1010 Ito's serve clipped the net and side edge, 1210
41, 42, 92, 93, 103, 104, 114
13, 14, 34, 36, 76 Ito served off the table, 86, 810, 910 slight edge for Hayata, 1010, 1011, 1111 slight net for Hayata, 1112, 1312, 1314, 1614

World: How did Ito reach the final?
Hirano: By 1 edge and 1 net.

Hirano remains the only one to have won by going through both Ito and Hayata at Zennoh Cup Funabashi and with the most difficult draw after 5 selection trials (Lion Cup/Zennoh Cup Fukuoka/Funabashi/Hiratsuka/Tokyo), 1 Zennihon Takkyu, and 2 Nojima Cup, spanning across 2022 and 2023.

Quote Will Hayata ever beat Ito again?

Find out later today.

Finall...(Hayata 3-4 Ito at Zennoh Cup Fukuoka), finall...(Hayata 3-4 Ito at Nojima Cup 2023), finally (Hayata 4-0 at Zennoh Cup Tokyo). Third time is the charm! Key to beating Ito?

Since Hayata has almost double the points of her compatriots, can she choose to sit out on some tournaments then?

Yes, it appears the rules allow it and both Hayata and Harimoto have expressed that they intend to skip the 6th selection trial.

I don't know if her plans have changed, but I do remember reading she plans on skipping the last trial if she has enough points.  Given how far she is ahead of everyone, I see no reason why she couldn't skip it and give herself a much deserved break.

Competition is fierce even for players that have no chance of making the team.  For players like Odo, Ando, and Yokoi this is their Olympics.

Team Miki House participating in Jia A (Div 1A) last month, with Shibata/Hashimoto playing for Shenzhen University and Odo/Sato for Ningbo University, seems to have little effect.
