Penhold here, I never got used to shakehand (felt crampled) when I was learning to play and so penhold did wonders for me, well, rather lucky since very few people at the club had backhands so the game was more forehandy oriented....

I was a Jpen player, but the backhand is too difficult for me. I switch to shake hand about a year ago.

I've always played shakehand. I try penhold here and there just for fun but I'm not very good at it except for the serves.

Shakehand. But occasionally I play penhold just for fun or to even out the odds when playing against a much weaker player.

I just have a problem with both grips.
If I play with Chinese Pen Hold, my forehand is amazingly good, and my backhand is not very weaker than my shakehand backhand. If I play with shakehand, my forehand is weaker spin, more consistency and better aiming. I love to play both styles, but I prefer shakehand only because I am more consistent. |

The poll shows 1/3 PH and 2/3 SH. There are more penhold players here than I've expected.

I am a shake hands player now. When I was in college I could play both pen hold and shake hands but that was long ago.

Only a blade can be a penhold or a shakehand. A grown-up man with an impeccable taste for terminology can be either penholder or a shakehander. |

Penhold.
I just never found the standard SH BH to be comfortable. RPB has a more natural motion for me. |

Thank you Re1Mu2R3 for saying that. I’ve finally heard someone who said RPB was more natural. I started playing ping pong with penhold with traditional backhand. I then switched to shakehand for 11 years at about the same level I was as penholder. I’ve switched to penhold four months ago as I found RPB looping fun and easier than shakehand. I feel my level now is better than before. |

is it safely assuming that non-Asian pen

That's international level.
How about at US level:
Lui Nai Hui & Cui Baoqun both are penhold players with awesome backhand attacks.

I actually switched to penhold because when I was screwing around, I found that my backhand was better w/ cpen than shakehand. I didn't know that it was uncommon to use the backhand side at the time. I'm still amazed that it took so long for rpb to become popular - it seemed only natural.

I was practicing with someone using RPB. I did not like the awkwardness of his backhand. I tried showing him RPB based on my knowledge of the shakehand. That’s when I fell in love with RPB. When I was using shakehand inverted on backhand, I always imagined of looping the backhand just like the forehand. I always imagined someday I could have the backhand in a 25-35 degrees angle and loop drive the ball. I never could develop that stroke in shakehand backhand. It was always at 55-65 degrees angle. Now I can do that with RPB with ease. With shakehand backhand, there was an instinctive fear that the angle of the paddle was too closed.
