Togami gives more insights in Butterfly's interview, responding to Harimoto's comment that he had the upper hand in BH-to-BH exchanges. From TV Tokyo's interview, Harimoto says he still has trouble coping with players with intense firepower that goes beyond his expectations. Even if he had taken G3 and G4, the root cause remained unresolved. He still has to change a big part of his game.

The one player who has not really been talked about much is Kihara.  Granted she had the easiest draw and did not have to face Ito in her half.  However, she looks to be physically noticeably stronger than before.  And getting the 1st 2 games from Hayata is no joke.  She's currently positioned at the #2 spot ahead of Hirano by 22 pts, but Hirano will get an Asian Games boost later in the year, probably 20 points.  Competition for that 2nd spot will be extremely tough especially between Kihara and Hirano because if Ito does not get the 2nd spot, she'll most likely get the 3rd spot due to her pairing with Hayata in doubles.

There is a problem if they use the Zennihon Takkyu 2023 final standings to seed the draw, namely 9 Nagasaki/10 Kato/11 Odo/12 Harimoto. Among Nagasaki, Kato, and Odo, one of them must be placed in the lower half, which violates the separation. Same issue for 13 Ito/14 Minagawa/15 Hashimoto/16 Ando. Among Ito, Minagawa, and Ando, one of them must be placed in the upper half.

Based on final standings at Zennihon Takkyu 2023

It's not explicitly stated but I suppose the final standings at Zennihon Takkyu 2023 will be used to seed Zennihon Takkyu 2024. That means Ishikawa will likely play the role of final boss.

Given the above, it can be concluded the "separation of players based on previous encounter" is essentially a positive feedback loop, which tends to destabilize the system. It nullifies, or more appropriately, destroys the "seeding", which is effectively a negative feedback loop.

ITO Jyota (and KONNO Noboru who complained in a more subtle way): Ishikawa failed to qualify for WTTC 2022 because of poor luck in the draw, meeting Hayata in the QF.
JTTA: How do you like Ishikawa vs Ito or Hayata vs Ito in the R16?

I suppose anything can happen, but I'm operating under the belief that they'll use the Zennoh Funabashi results to see Paris 2024 Trial #4.  I can understand why they used the 2022 All Japan to seed Paris #1. It was the 1st trial so they needed something to start off the seeding and why not the most recent at the time domestic tournament where all the best players are playing.  Now that the race is well under way, it makes sense to seed the next Paris tournament from the previous Paris tournament.

Assuming it's Funabashi, this looks to be a good development for Hirano because she is separated from Hayata and Hirano's top 8 competitor will be Sato.  Kihara is also in the opposite half of Hayata, but her top 8 competitor is Miwa.  Although she's beaten Miwa before, if I were her, I'd much rather face Sato than Miwa.  Ito is in the same half as Hayata and has Shibata in her quarter as well.  So Mima has a tough road ahead of her in seeking that 2nd spot.  But who knows, Mima started off the race very badly losing to Nagasaki and clawed her way back up in 2022.

FWIW, Mima is really struggling going into next week's WTT Contender.  She lost the 1 game victory match against Cheng I-Ching in T-League and took it really hard:

Mori & Hayata: Take it easy, Mima-chan. We're playing the leagues just for fun (and money).

To see Ito trying so hard in a USELESS league match (.5 pts, FFS) like that is disheartening.

What kind of selection system would let OUTSIDE FORCES be a FACTOR?

Down but not out.  Mima Ito gets back on her feet earlier today with a convincing 3-0 win over Shibata in TLeague earlier today:

Happy to see her winning and smiling again.  It would have been devastating having a 2nd loss going into the Contender Amman.

Togami's interview with TAKAGI Mina. Togami says match-up is part of the reason behind his win over Harimoto and he still can't perform at will against CNT players, revealing that his head was blank when playing FZD and WCQ at WTTC 2022.

https://number.bunshun.jp/articles/-/856366?page=2
Quote

TTWR 2023 Week 6 comes with date of expiry for points accrued. Hayata and Ito face the most pressure before WTTC 2023 in May, 1100 (600+500) and 700 pts, respectively. As other top players also face the same situation, Kihara and Hirano will rise in ranking, without having to do a thing.

https://mytabletennis.net/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=91479&PID=1126297
Quote Vindicated? Far from it. Hayata is still the biggest "loser" here. After putting in so much work in 2021, what has she got in return? Her career high ranking is as good as useless if not for the Asian Games which will THEORETICALLY get her an extra 40 pts in the race. The only other times world ranking will come into play are the WTTC 2023 and ATTC 2023. However, by that time(see below quote), her current points will start to expire/have expired. Even then, she will still have to win/finish high in the Paris 2024 Qualifier #4 and/or #5 to earn 1 of the 5 singles spots.

She has a tough R16: winner of CIC vs. Kuai Man.  My pick between CIC vs. Kuai Man is CIC.  She's been playing very well as of late, but you never know how it will go vs. China's top junior.

Given CIC lost to Fan Siqi at WTT CT Doha 2023, if Kuai Man can play like she does at home, then CIC has no chance. In other words, it depends on Kuai Man and not CIC.

The last time CIC beat a CNT player goes back to Hong Kong Open 2019, where she beat HZJ 4-3 in R16.

Tieba users are totally ignoring CIC...

Don't see much logical thinking here.

Seriously. CIC is roughly the same level as DHK now. Look how DHK played Kuai Man.

Look up who Kuai Man lost to in 2022 and 2023 and you will see a pattern of players/styles she has trouble with.

Kuai Man plays well against the most common style.

Down but not out.  Mima Ito gets back on her feet earlier today with a convincing 3-0 win over Shibata in TLeague earlier today:

Happy to see her winning and smiling again.  It would have been devastating having a 2nd loss going into the Contender Amman.

That T.League weekend was really a rollercoaster of emotions for Ito such that the TV Tokyo Table Tennis Youtube channel even posted a special video entitled "[Tearful revenge] Mima Ito "It's been a long time since I won and cried." From Bitter Tears to Happy Tears"

The loss against CIC was particularly tough and understandable: (1) Red Elf is in 4th place and is in danger of missing the playoffs. It needed a win against 3rd place Top Nagoya to strengthen their chances of making the playoffs (only the top 3 regular season teams make it) (2) Ito was up 4-0 and 7-4 in the VM, so she was in a good position to win. She lost like 3 or 4 points to lucky net balls towards the end of the game, so I think the way she lost where she blew a decent lead was hard to take. (3) Compounding this loss on top of her early exit in the All Japan added salt to her wounds (4) Ito rarely loses to non-Chinese foreigners and takes these losses harder than most.

I've never seen Ito break down in tears before even reaching the bench to sit down after a loss. Ito seems to be the type to cry and express her sadness by herself, but this time, she shared and expressed her sadness with her teammates and with the coaching staff right after the loss. Kudos to her teammates and the coaching staff for effectively consoling her, and I feel that their support lifted Ito's morale for the next day's match. Against Shibata, Ito's serve and receive game was on point. Shibata couldn't return Ito's serves and had difficult dealing with her variations. Ito was also keeping up in the rallies and made few mistakes.

It's also a rare occasion to see Ito in tears after a Victory, especially during her matches from 2019 onwards (Olympic Games XD QF being the only exception). From 2019 onwards, Ito has often been very tempered and mellow in her victory celebrations (See 2019 All Japan, 2020 Top 12, 2021 OG Bronze Medal, 2022 All Japan, 2022, 2nd Road to Paris Trials, and all the WTT Contenders and Star Contenders Ito has won so far) Judging Ito's current reactions, it's clear the situation she's facing now feels a lot different from that in 2019-2022. In a way, it's refreshing to see Ito openly express these emotions to remind us that despite being a professional, at the end of the day, she's still human like all of us.

An Interesting note: Matsusaki, Ito's personal coach, wasn't on the bench on both days. Ito was mainly receiving advice from Murakami. I wonder if Coach Matsusaki will be on Ito's bench in Amman.

ITO Jyota didn't disappoint, this time taking aim at Kihara and defending Ishikawa and Shibata, while conveniently ignoring the latter two's international win rate for the Paris 2024 period, which happen to be the lowest among the top 8.

ITO Jyota even uses the fact that Hayata and Ishikawa being in the same quarter at Lion Cup due to the the fixed draw as the root cause for Ishikawa missing out on WTTC 2022 and subsequently WTTC 2023. Questionable logic, but the way he breaks down the points gained by the leading players is just another form of H2H.

The bottom line? Only Ito and Hirano have managed to beat Hayata so far. Only Hirano has managed to beat Ito and Hayata in the same tournament so far. Only Hayata, among the top 6 in leaderboard plus Harimoto, has yet to beat Ito. She had the chance to beat Hirano, Ito, and Ishikawa consecutively at Zennoh Cup Fukuoka when "her table tennis was totally different". Can she manage it at the upcoming Zennihon Takkyu 2023? If not, she will remain merely the "leading player" in points.

A breakdown of the domestic encounters for the top 3 since the race started:
Hayata vs
Shibata - 1 time (Lion Cup R16 4-1)
Ishikawa - 1 time (Lion Cup QF 4-3)
Kihara - 3 times (Lion Cup SF 4-2; Nojima Cup SF 4-0; Zennoh Cup Funabashi SF 4-2)
Nagasaki - 2 times (Lion Cup F 4-3, Zennoh Cup Fukuoka 3rd-4th 4-2)
Hirano - 3 times (Nojima Cup F 4-1; Zennoh Cup Fukuoka QF 4-0; Zennoh Cup Funabashi F 2-4)
Ito - 1 time (Zennoh Cup Fukuoka SF 3-4)
Harimoto - 1 time (Zennoh Cup Funabashi QF 4-2)

Ito vs
Harimoto - 2 times (Lion Cup R16 4-1; Zennoh Cup Funabashi 5th-6th 1-4)
Nagasaki - 1 time (Lion Cup QF 2-4)
Hashimoto - 1 time (Lion Cup 5th-8th 4-1)
