Harimoto will turn 15 on the 16th. Ito first beat DN at ~15.5.

Rather than too early, it's too hard. Back then, Ito competed against Ishikawa, Fukuhara, Sayaka Hirano, and Miu Hirano. In contrast, Harimoto has to compete against Hayata, Hirano, Ito, (Ishikawa), Kihara, Nagasaki, Shibata, Sato, and Hashimoto.

In the March poll, Hayata is ranked 5th again in "Cute Athlete". Not holding out hope for the next poll even with the WTTC bronze, given the disappointing TV rating.

Quote Just how difficult is it to change the public perception?

After a lackluster year, Ito still placed 4th in "Active Female Athlete of the Year" of the year-end poll. In "Active Female Athlete Looking Forward to the Next Year", Ito and Hirano placed 2nd and 5th, respectively.

As for Hayata? She made 5th place in "Cute Athlete" of the March poll. That's it. After so much work, and getting hurt again, this is what she gets. Cute, yes. No. 1, no.

Quote Vindicated? Far from it. Hayata is still the biggest "loser" here. After putting in so much work in 2021, what has she got in return? Her career high ranking is as good as useless if not for the Asian Games which will THEORETICALLY get her an extra 40 pts in the race. The only other times world ranking will come into play are the WTTC 2023 and ATTC 2023. However, by that time(see below quote), her current points will start to expire/have expired. Even then, she will still have to win/finish high in the Paris 2024 Qualifier #4 and/or #5 to earn 1 of the 5 singles spots.

http://mytabletennis.net/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=91479&PID=1126329
Quote She may be OFFICIALLY the highest-ranked now, but to be recognized as one of the best 2? Not that easy. The standard now is far higher than it was in 2019.

She needs more titles. That's why I listed them in my last post.

http://mytabletennis.net/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=91479&PID=1126440
Quote Back to Hayata. As I pointed out, she still needs more titles. World ranking is just a number. And in this Olympic cycle, under the pandemic, its value has been diminished to the point that its weight is light as a feather.

T.League Nojima Cup 2023 6/17-18 Live Stream Links

See this article for full list of live streaming links: https://tleague.jp/news/detail.php?id=2649
See the schedule here: https://tleague.jp/singles/2023/

Most of the matches for the T.League Nojima Cup 2023 6/17-18 will be streamed on Youtube. However 6 of the matches including, the Men's and Women's 3rd place games, Men's and Women's  Singles Finals, 1 Men's R16 Match and 1 Women's R16 Match will be streamed exclusively on LEMINO. The article says that LEMINO is free, but it remains unknown whether you need to create an account and whether it will be geo-locked to Japan. Note that Table 2 is the TV Table.

Links to the 2023 Nojima Cup livestream on the T.League Youtube channel are here. Currently they are unlisted videos so you may want to save the links. Given that all QFs, SFs matches and most R16 matches will be streamed on Youtube, the coverage for fans outside Japan seems to be better than last year's Nojima Cup coverage.

5. Nagasaki: 158 + 20 = 178
6. Sato: 175
7. Miwa: 160.5
8. Shibata: 137

With an almost 60 point lead on Sato, Ito's spot in the Asian championships is relatively safe unless she has another early-round exit at the 5th Paris Trials. It's entirely possible for Miwa to weasel her way into the roster and I hope that she does.

As previously mentioned, I'm not sure if points earned from the 5th Road to Paris Trials will even be considered in determining the Top 5 players for the Asian Championships.

Originally posted by apacible apacible wrote:

The next checkpoint for players is to be Top 5 in Paris Points 30 days from the date of the final entry deadline so they can qualify for the 2023 Asian Championships from Sept. 3-10 in Korea. The prospectus of the Asian Championships hasn't been released yet but as a rough estimate, entry deadlines are around 3 weeks before the date of the competition. That's the week of August 13, 2023. 30 days before that is July 13, 2023. That means, there is a high chance that the 5th Road to Paris tournament scheduled for July 22-23, 2023, will not be included in computing the Top 5 Paris Points standings to determine the representatives of the Asian Championships. (because it falls less than 30 days from the date of the final entry deadline.)

Last chances to gain Paris points for Asian Championships 2023
  • WTTC 2023
  • T. League Individual Tournament/Nojima Cup dated June 17-18, 2023
  • Wins vs Top 3 Chinese (Highly unlikely we see them in the Contender events so this is likely moot)
If my interpretation of this phrase is correct "£体・シングルスの£表選手を、アジア卓球選手権平昌大会(以下、アジア選手権)エントリー最終日の 30 日前までのパリオリンピックシングルス選考ポイント(以下、選考ポイント)" then Hayata, Hirano, Ito, and Kihara's spots in the Asian Championships are confirmed. If the T.League Individual Tournament is the only tournament left, they cannot be overtaken by 2 or more players below them in standings.

This means that the 5th and last Asian Championships spot is a race between Nagasaki, Sato, and M. Harimoto. For Harimoto to make it, she needs to earn at least 20pts more than both Nagasaki and Sato in this tournament. For example, if both Nagasaki and Sato lose in the QF of the T.League Individual Tournament, Harimoto will need to finish at least 3rd. If Nagasaki and Sato both lose in the SF, Harimoto would have to finish 1st. If one of Nagasaki or Sato is 4th place and the other loses in the QF, Harimoto would need to finish 2nd.

For Nagasaki and Sato, since their points are nearly identical, securing an Asian Championships spot would come down to if Sato can finish a round better than Nagasaki without getting overtaken by Harimoto.

Prospectus for the 2023 Asian Table Tennis Championships is out: https://www.dropbox.com/s/fnas8rhylcn713c/Prospectus_ATTC_2023_FINAL_0607.pdf?dl=0

Entry Deadline is July 23, 2023, 12nn Qatar Time, 6pm Japan Time.

5th Road to Paris Tournament will be from July 22-23, 2023, so it will likely be excluded in determining the Top 5 players for the Asian Championships. Hayata, Hirano, Ito, and Kihara's spots in the Asian Championships are confirmed with the 2023 Nojima Cup determining the final spot?

Kitakyushu, Fukuoka, Hayata's hometown, has decided to bid for WTTC 2028.    Kitakyushu lost the bid for WTTC 2022 to Chengdu in 2019. WTTC 2014 was the last time Japan won the bid.

MS Draw

WS Draw

Nagasaki celebrated her birthday yesterday, June 15, while M. Harimoto celebrated her birthday today, June 16. Their gift? --- a difficult draw where Sato has a legitimate shot to take the 5th Asian Championships slot away from both of them.

Despite not explicitly being stated, the draws and seeding for this year's Nojima Cup follow the same guidelines as last year's T.League individual tournament: 1st Seed is the All Japan Champion while the other seeds are ordered based on number of T.League singles wins in the 22-23 Season.

Seeding:
1-2 (Hayata, Ando)
3-4 (Shibata, Ito)
5-6 (Hirano, Hashimoto)
7-8 (Kihara, M. Harimoto)
9-12 (Mori, Nomura, Odo, Nagasaki)
13-16 (Sasao, Namba, Sato, Yokoi)
17-24 (The Rest)

Miwa Harimoto- She needs to finish at least 3rd to have a chance at the 5th and last Asian Championships Spot. She's forecasted to play Hayata in the QF, someone who she's never beaten before. As the 7-8 seed, she had a 50% chance of drawing Hayata in the QF and 50% of drawing Ando instead. Kihara got the draw luck this time and drew Ando's Quarter so Harimoto got drawn to Hayata's quarter. If Kihara and Harimoto had swapped spots in the draw, Harimoto's would have had a better chance at reaching the SF and possibly securing an Asian Championships Spot.

Nagasaki- She drew Hirano in the R16, a player Nagasaki has lost to at least 6 straight times, with the most recent match being 4th Road to Paris Tournament 5th/6th place game Hirano 4-0 Nagasaki.

Sato- Assuming that Hirano beats Nagasaki in the R16, and Harimoto loses in the QF against Hayata, Sato would just need to make the QF to secure the 5th and final Asian Championships spot. Ando stands in Sato's way and Ando has beaten Sato before (though Sato won the most recent matchup in the 4th Road to Paris Tournament 4-2). Nevertheless, based on history, Sato beating Ando seems more probable than Nagasaki beating Hirano or Harimoto beating Hayata.

Ito- aside from being drawn to Hayata's half instead of Ando's half, Ito's draw favors her to reach at least the SF. She avoided some potential obstacles in by drawing Hashimoto in the QF and avoiding Hirano (50% chance of drawing either player). Ito also avoided Yokoi in the R16 (25% chance of drawing her).

Miku Izumo (if she gets past Namba) could be a wild card though as a left-handed BH pips player who beat Nagasaki in the R16 this year's All Japan and beat Ishikawa 3-0 is last year's Japan Table Tennis League (JTTL, is one division lower than T.League). Notably she's the reason why M. Harimoto and Ito didn't face each other in the R64 of the 2022 All Japan TT Championships since Izumo beat Harimoto in the qualifying round. Izumo was actually the only player to take 2 games off Ito in Ito's 2022 All Japan Championship run.

Hayata- Despite being the 1st seed, she arguably has the toughest draw among high-seeded players- Yokoi in the R16 and Harimoto likely in the QF. Quoting zeio: "Makes one wonder what's the point of being the No. 1 seed?" Hayata was the 2nd seed in both the 2023 All Japan Championships and the 4th Road to Paris Tournament and also got difficult draws. Yet, Hayata managed to hurdle the difficult draws to win both tournaments. Can she do it again this time?

Nevertheless, based on history, Sato beating Ando seems more probable than Nagasaki beating Hirano or Harimoto beating Hayata.
...
Sato has been very lucky throughout these trials.  However, I think Miwa has a chance.  Hayata is so far ahead of everyone that she plans on skipping the last trial.  Getting to a QF is probably enough to secure that much needed rest so she won't be nearly as motivated as Miwa. Nagasaki has a tough barrier potentially facing Hirano, but her BH has noticeably improved so who knows.

Sato performed in key events that mattered, namely finishing 5th and 6th at Zennihon Takkyu 2022 and 2023. The one in 2022 that served as the initial seeding set the tone for the rest of the trials.

Had it not been Sato who took out Hashimoto 4-3 in QF of Lion Cup, Hashimoto would've been the "5th wheel" for WTTC 2022.

Had it not been I Ayano who took out Kihara 4-1 in R16 of Zennoh Cup Hiratsuka, Kihara could very well have been the one in the final instead of Harimoto, and Harimoto would have 0 chances of qualifying for WS of ATTC 2023 here.

In terms of favorable draw, Kihara actually takes it home here. Even Ishikawa pales in comparison.

It's the schedule of all the men's matches. The text can be selected and copied to google translate or you could opt to use google chrome's auto translate function to view the page translated in English.

Rin Mende is improving so fast.  She gave Saki Yokoi all she could handle.  She makes up for her thin frame with solid technique.  There's no wasted motion in her strokes and her FH is much better than last year.  But Yokoi's power won out in the end.

Was surprised to see that R. Yoshiyama was in Texas playing in a tournament just a week ago. Dinh Duc Le gave him a good match. Also interesting to see that Japan's 3rd in Paris Points has USA TT Rating of 2750.

With Sato's R24 win and Nagasaki's R24 exit, Nagasaki is out of contention for the 5th Asian Championships spot.

It now comes down to Harimoto or Sato for the final Asian Championships spot.

I watched Nagasaki’s match live…..was a bit surprised she lost but she made a lot of unforced errors. Nerves? She just had a birthday, maybe too much partying lol?
