Not sure what the difference is.  I could give either answer.

Mostly fixed, the elbow is the pivot point for the whole movement. It only moves a little on strong shots, if any at all.

Edit *the elbow moves pre-stroke while getting it into position for the stroke.

there is a travel of the elbow to the playing hand side, all the way in deceleration, after contact, for comfort and smoother recovery. It is possible to recover while keeping the elbow on a line parallel to the length of the table but it would be work that takes value away because the elliptical recovery we want for the paddle must exist as well at the level of the elbow.
the elbow always moves during bh: forward and to the playing hand direction when close to the table and in a wide semi circle towards the playing hand side when far away. the elbow draws an ellipse that is a mini version of the paddle's trajectory.

Btw this is one of the best descriptions of the elbow movement for the BH stroke over here...

Thanks, I realize I have much progress to do re. using less words to say anything but at least I think of it, highest return 1st!
To our credit it’s a complex sport and it’s normal to apprehend a lack of reach, the balance is subtle, it’s a whole other sub category of efficiency, but what is not when we make a move, any move?
