I realized that I've never done a poll. I thought this would be a good one. :) |

you are funny!!! you know that many people will sell a match and accept to lose for money. It's not rare at all. One day I was kidding (I REALLY WAS KIDDING) and I asked _JUST TO TEASE_ a 2100 before a tourney match if he would loose for $75 and he said yes. Then I got surprised and only got away when I told him I could not pay before next month...I was happy when he said "forget about it".
It's done all the time.
So I tell you: your joke reflects reality for sure!

IMHO here is a brief explanation of rating, anyone below 1000 is novice level, just a beginner who is learning the game. 1000-1200 not a beginner, but someone who is still learning the game, placement, footwork, strokes, and can be easily beaten by the higher level players in the club. might occasionally get a game or match off a higher 1200-1400 rated player, 1400-1800 level experienced, relatively good strokes, but probably has some major flaws or weakness that is exploited by higher level players -- but again these are good players and there is quite a difference between 1400 and 1800 -- 1800 level player has great strokes, good footwork, reads serves well, can serve well, and has good patience and understands tactics. 1800-2000 we are getting to a bit higher level here, this is a semi-advanced to advanced player who understands the game, can execute strokes at will - one who is refining - getting coaching - has deception, patience, timing, power, touch, and footwork.
2000 and above, we are getting to the competitive level. Above 2000 guys are the best guys in your local clubs. A 2200 player could go somewhere with his game if he applies himself or herself (as long as young enough) I played against a 2200 player... it was like a kid playing against his loving dad. he did not want to humiliate me but it was clear to all that he was not challenged by anything I did. Poise, grace, style begin to enter into the game here. It is beyond just good strokes and footwork. think of an adult 1500 level player playing with a young kid trying to learn the game. that is what it is like IMO playing against an advanced player. (at least one who is cool ) Above 2200-2400 I have no idea, that is like getting into the realm of Alien play. I would say starting to approach semi pro here, and 2500 and above is pro with sponsers and hot girlfriends, supercars, tuxedos, butlers, mansions, private jets -- you know 007 stuff |

i've seen 1200 players beat 2000 players. there are players who simply don't do good in tournaments due to mental pressures.
