I was wondering, does Samsonov still use the Samsonov Alpha blade? If not, what's he using these days?

Thanks!

that would partly explain why he is such a great player: this blade is such a fantastic piece of table tennis gear.

I heard that he never used Samsonov alpha. He  used Butterfly Mazunov OFF+, but now during speed glue ban, who knows?

There was a big discussion about this some time ago. The conclusion was that he used a really old version of the Samsonov Alpha for a loong time, and that he never used the Mazunov. I'm not saying that this is for sure, though.

No one seemed to know what he is using now, but he did brake his old "Samsonov Alpha".

Agree with Schlager.  I read somewhere that he used old version Samsonov Alpha with white lens on the handle.  Read somewhere also that old version Samsonov Alpha was heavy (>90 grams), unlike the newer version which only 80 grams.  So old version might have been much faster.

I don't know why Tibhar redesigned Alpha, I read the old one was excellent.

yes... old blade is deadly broken...

by the way with all the reparations of the blade since 17 years... it was impossible to use max rubbers because of the milimeters rules.

Watch this, minute 2:55:

Now tell me thats not a Mazunov. That's the blade he's been using since he was a junior, I know this because my coach was a close friend of Vladi, and also from a teammate of him in Granada. It's a very old Mazunov, slightly different from the current version. He's been using it long before he was sponsored by Tibhar. I remember someone in this forum asked Tibhar about this and they said "he is trying stuff, his blade is broken, blablabla...", of course, what are they going to say? Their N1 sponsored player doesn't use their blades?

LOL
you are right it does look more like a mazunov than like the old samsonov alpha.
it also makes sense to think he used a mazunov since he comes from the russian zone where most players are said to use that blade. maybe he didn't want to change his blade, that's why tibhar at first made a really similar blade to confuse us all and boost alpha's sales.
what I don't understand is why doesn't he just get another mazunov and keep playing with it.
I guess now he needs something more offensive.

i asked about the link...

this is the answer:

"No, the blade of Vladi was specially built for him long, long time ago (I think in the first year he stayed in Dsseldorf, this must be about 17 years ago). The problem of his blade and all other old blades is, that they are not straight anymore, that means, they use allowed rubbers, but the measument of the rubbers is at the blade and if the blade is not straight, they measure more than the allowed thickness of 4 cm. This was also the problem of Vladi during the WC, because he had to use rubbers which are too thin, because the referee measured too much before. It is very complicated.

Best regards"

there is no link... i email this:

"hello!

i have just seen a video of spanish competition. i saw that samsonov is using a new rubber NIANMOR (?) on an old butterfly mazunov... (but it is not a secret that vladi doesn't use a tibhar blade...)

what could you tell me about that new rubber?

have a nice day!

pierre"

and the answer:

"Hello,

sorry, but Vladi is not playing a butterfly mazunov. It is the first construction of the Samsonov alpha blade, which went to production in a little bit different way. But this blade is broken now, so he is testing now new blades wit also new rubbers.

For the rubber he tried, called Nianmor, this will be a new developpment from TIBHAR made in Japan, totally different from the new DONIC rubber also made in Japan. I don`t know a lot about this rubber, because he is still in testing, they change all the time some different things. Compared to Tenergy he is much better for playing directly behind the table, but not so good in long distances shoots.

I think this rubber will be on market in august. That`s all informations I have at the moment.

Best regards"

so i never saw the first alpha... i really can't tell something about it...

I'm not saying that this is the truth, but I guess we'll never know..

by the way i saw maybe one year ago on ebay one of the first alpha blade and it looks like a clone of mazunov...
but the one of samsonov is (was) a prototype... not even the same at the first serie... 17 years ago when he played in dusseldorf.

you can't compare  a new mazunov and an old tibhar.

the old tibhar is alpha serie... but vladi played with the proto not the buyable serie...
