Big thanks should go to Yogi for what he has been doing by great efforts to help more kids in his country to be able to play table tennis. Compared with that, what we have done is just little.

I always admire such act of valor in our sport.
The country where I live is not far from my fellow Kabayans (I live @ Indonesia). Probably one day I should do a similar gesture :)

Thank you Yogi_bear for your introduction.
I have recently join the coaching staff of the local provincial junior team on a free of charge basis. I am also good friends with some of the coaches there, and one of the things we talked about is how to get better equipment to the juniors (all under the age of 17 or 18). As they use second hand equipment and have been using them for a long time, and maybe even more than 2 years+ (rubbers) From a blade point of view, I think it is still fine - as long as they don't damage them during play. But rubbers tend to wear out more than what free equipment comes in from existing channels. There is already budgets on tables, practice balls, surronds and playing venue - which is all donated. Some of the individual players also gets small amount of funding from government or parents, but I would say 80% of them will require additional help from the coaches. Just so you know, there is a national tournament coming up in 1 months time, and some of them will struggle to get together $100 of travel and accomendation cost to cover 7 days. I don't prefer sponsoring by financial means, but I think unwanted equipment for the less fortunate for now is a good start. And I am thinking of forming a NPO or something like that in the near future to help the rest of them. I was touch when I saw this thread and what Yogi_bear is doing. I would like to just have more information on how I can get the MyTT community to help and advise what I can do simliar to what has been done around the world already. |

hi Yogi_Bear,
Thank you so much for bringing it up agian. To give an update on what I have been doing, I have volunteer in coaching the provincial junior team - free of charge. Some of the players folks also approached me asking to coach their kids. I also been doing it free of charge. This coaching is taking about 15 hours a week from me now, as there is a national championship coming up from 30 Sep. I am also taking leave from work, and funding my own transportation (lucky accomdation is free) for 7 days at a city that is 1600km away from me to manage a U17 team and some players at the tournament Thus I have been more busy than before, but feeling better as I am doing more for others than doing for myself. I am also trying to start a TT store and to register to be a reseller with certain brands - from there, I am just aiming for little margin and to break even, but rather building relationship with those brands and hopefully I can get some sort of support structure from the vendors to the local TT comunity here. Currently there is Butterfly/Tibhar/Stiga sponsored juniors, but we are talking about less than 5 in total. and there is Stag that donates tables and barriers, other than that - all the clubs and players are spending money (that they may not have) to have children play Table Tennis. Feedback after my previous post - I see a lot of cadet (U12/U14) using donated equipment - those recreational bats - which is a big no no. So at it stands - any rubber/blades new or old will be better than those silk like rubbers they have now (unless they want to play anti spin lol) Edited by ZApenholder - 09/14/2012 at 10:26am |

Just came back from coaching.
This young lady (age 15) is number 8 in Africa last year in the U14 age group. She is using a "cheap" blade, I think it is a Stiga recreational blade, with 2 sheets of Tibhar nimus, from what her father told me is 2 years old already, with damages to the edge and even a tear almost in the sweat spot - I believe it is not even legal to use.... Apparently she will be getting sponsored 2 new sheets next year. But she is playing in the national championship in 2 weeks.... Just to give you guys an idea on the condition of the better playing juniors, yet alone the cadets that really don't have access to decent equipment. So please, if any one has unwanted equipment, please can you let me know on how you can assist? Thanking you all in advance Edited by ZApenholder - 09/14/2012 at 5:46pm |
