Here's a question that came up. Are there any really top players - say, top 100 in the world, men or women - who use regular Mark V or Sriver?

If hybrid counts, then Wang Hao is one. He still uses Sriver topsheet on Bryce sponge.

That's a good question Larry.  It has never shown up on this thread, and people here seem very much on top of this kind of thing.  It would very much surprise me if any of the usual offensively spin oriented players could succeed that way that level.  Maybe on BH side?

No, looking to see if there are any top players using good old fashioned Mark V or Sriver, like the sponges used since the 1970s - not hybrids or modern versions. They are still sold and probably sell well at lower levels, but are there any top players who use them?

Other than Wang Hao, practically all top players have migrated to Tenergy or a select few high-end next-gen tensors after the glue ban.

I don't think any top 100 World player uses a classic. I know one player who used be in top 100 in France using classics on a Stiga Allround Evolution blade. He never used speed glue in the speed glue era, never used boost and never switched to tensor rubbers. Already seeing this at this kind of level is quite amazing so a top 100 World player would be quite crazy. I don't know how to rate a top 100 player in France but Damien Provost who played in the US last season is ranked about no 60 in France.

By the way what short pips rubber He Zhi Wen is using?

What rubbers Chtchetinine is using?

Pro's have their blades customized in a way that you cant tell just by the handle. they will often make it look like one blade when it's really something else.

I know it's a bit down the road, but my friend spent quite a bit of time with Yu Ziyang at the Japan open after his win. He interviewed him for a chinese TT website/magazine (can't remember which) and had a media pass for the whole thing. So I'll have pictures of Yu Ziyang's Japan open setup- He gave it to my friend! The whole damn thing! haha. I saw the pics on WeChat and couldn't believe it.

There's something I've always wondered. When you feel a pro's hurricane rubber does it feel significantly softer and/or springier than commercial versions? I haven't seen anyone actually address this, because so few people have actually held a real top Chinese player's bat :D

not significantly softer, but yes, springier. it's more elastic: pliable and flexy, while a commercial is like a slab of cheap, hard rubber. you know how when playing with cheap chinese rubber, sometimes it makes a sharp, cracking sound like a flat hit? pro hurricanes don't have that as much and that type of inconsistency is virtually non-existent for a national grade hurricane.

as far as i've tested, real ones can't be bought online. i've bought from "reputable" online dealers and while better than commercials, they're still different from the ones i acquired directly from players. the purchased ones are still playable though - i'm using one right now - the only difference i find is the quality is in between a commercial and a real provincial. you can tell when you lay them side by side with one used by a pro. control is much better, spin slightly more, speed negligible difference.

Shibaev definitely uses Korbel.
Smirnov was using old Clipper since his childhood until it was broken. Then he tried a lot of blades but I don't know if he finished his holy grail search :)

Do you think boosting a commercial hurricane decently approximates a higher quality version?

@argothman no. even getting a good pc and heavily boosting it, it may reach provincial level for a few days at best and that's like 1 in 6.
