HOW TO CALCULATE THE RACKET HEAD AREA BY USING A JEWELRY BALANCES.

Blade's head area (summary for 14 blades):

    Classic head shape. =200 cm2
    Oversized head shape = 215 cm2

You may opt to find an exact area of blade(s) of your own.
We would suggest a witty methode to calculate the head area using a precise digital balances (reading to 0.01g) plus A4 sheet of hard cardboard material.
I like it best of all, for invariably giving me true results.

1. Copy down the racket head onto the cardboard sheet and cut the contour out.
2. Find weight of the cutting   (W)
3. Cut out a 10x10cm rectangle from the head shape and weigh up the rectangle (P)
4. The racket head area (S) = W/P x 100 cm2

Have a fun !!!

Wait a second, Rich, they do report the weight of the blades as a median, why not do that for the weight/area  parameter of the rubbers? It still would be very useful. Yes, you are right there is variability, but is it really that large?

While I agree with you that it would be usefulThumbs Up, perhaps ask yourself this question: "What's in it for them?". I think that by giving a weight, they may potentially lose part of their potential customers, who might dismiss it purely based on the weight.

Yes, I thought exactly the same thing, but then for the blades the weights are reported... I don't know...

Impossible task for a manufacture to label ever rubber.....  There are way too many variances in cut sizes and weights within the same rubber production run.  Even ESN rubbers of the same exact rubber, I have seen varying weights and different cut sizes.  Though the ESN rubbers I use most....the amount of cut size difference is small but the weight difference can be bigger because of the sponge production does not allow for exact quality control of density, weight, thickness in a large piece that individual cuts come from.  Good example of this is the production of the DHS sponges.

So, for a manufacture to state any weight or cut size.....that would be harder to do than a manufacture putting the blade weights and exact thickness on the packaging.  There are variances in production and if they did do this....you would see a blade weight listed more realistically as  85g +-12g.  lol     Rubbers would be worse.   A rubber uncut weight could be  66g +- 8g, density 42 +- 4, thickness 2.2mm +-0.5mm, size 169x170 +- 6mm.   lol   Wink

Yes, a lot of TT rubber sales are generated by ignorance.

The links are in the first post of this thread.  One is to the new location of the old mass.doing itwrong.net.  The other is to the new database that Haggisv has put together..

Weight/area: to me, this is the one parameter that I feel is missing in the major catalogs of TT rubbers. Is there a reason for this?

The only meaningful way to present this is to give the gm/cm2 value (or another weight/area ratio; vendors, especially Chinese, sometimes change the sizes of the uncut rubber sheets, I saw that happen e.g. with 802-40 pips.
There used to be some compilations by players posted on forums (MYTT?), I lost the access though.
Could anybody include a link here? Thanks.
