Watching all these matches it seems like you can get by with a strong forehand and weak backhand but not with a strong backhand and weak forehand. All these guys with strong forehands and passive, weak backhands...

Zhang Jike is more BH-oriented than FH. Same can be said - to some degree - about Oh, Dima, Kreanga and Vladi. Timo, Ma Long, Wang Liqin, Tang Peng belong rather to the FH camp... imho. Etc...

I don't think ZJK played his best, if you watched China open, he clearly played better. He also took the national title, which is no small feast. I think the last moment replacement put him on the spot, otherwise he would have prepared him better and played better.

He seems to prefer his BH to open the rally, but would run around to finish point with his FH.  I remember seeing him trying to chop the ball one time against WH.  If he does that more often, he'll really be an all-around player.

eh, Vladi and Oh are balanced players, just take balls where they go to. Kreanga is a prime example of my point, sure he was ok, but he never won anything big or beat anyone big really, just never able to compete against the Chinese. I mean good lord...he won...the 1989 Iran open and the 1992 Iceland open...that's it, and he has the best backhand for decades...proves my point, you can have the best backhand and never win, but the best forehand like Ma Long will claim the top spots.

Of course, that's why chinese coaches insist to develop a strong forehand attack first. Not only that, a good forehand attack demands that one should have quick footwork which helps to get into right position in time.

I was watching this lobing ralies in Zhang Jike - Jun Mizutani match, and I think that Zhang have to learn drop shots like Ma Lin.

To me as well, Mizutani Vs Zhang was the most exciting match.       Great rallies and plenty of drama.

Although MJ won in the first 3 games, they were very close.

MJ almost closed the deal in the 6th.    He acted like he did a couple of times at the end but ZJ was able to keep his cool.

Anyone noticed net balls seemed to mean nothing to Zhang?

Nonetheless, lets not forget a healthy Ma Long wasn't there.

Is it me or the chinese lack sportsmanship? Who the hell claps at a mistake hit. Or root when they win on a net. It has gotten better as of late, but overall trend since I could remember they do not win with dignity.
