The majority of people think dead and low balls are what you should serve to long pip players. But how do the pros handle Joo Se Hyuk, or Kim Kyung Ah? I've only seen them in videos, and it's hard to see clearly what they are giving them. So I'll ask you chaps with good eyes. How do the pros serve to pip players? I'm tired of icing all my serves when I play long pip players. I want more variety. JKC what do you think? It doesn't matter what kind of player you are, if you have good eyes. Please share what you think.

Dead and low balls will be more effective with lower level players because they usually pop it up or push it out side or return really weak but JSH or KKA will be able to return them low and still carries backspin so that is only one option. Yes the key is variety so they will use both low and dead balls and normal serves to the forehand also like Ma Lin he serves with tons of side spin to Joo's forehand and backhand and attack the next one since he reads the spin well. You can watch the latest video of Ma Lin vs JSH in Guangzhou, Ma Lin did lots of back+sidespin serves. But they mostly serve to their forehand to avoid the annoying long pips otherwise they have been planning to serve to the LP side and do something next already.

Watch some matches of Schlager playing him, such as the 2003 WTTC.

so you're saying if I give you a dead ball you can make underspin using your LP's? is it that jab motion Joo does, that makes the spin?

Why not short serve, because he will anyway return long with backspin, so why risking to miss the table with long serve.

JH is such a special player in my books the greatest defender I have ever seen. Short balls wont worry players at such a high level and to be honest,as I am not near that level my suggestion here will most probably be invalid.

If you're Ma Long, then varying placement of pendulum serves appears to work :-)

I think serving short is the worst thing you can do to a pips player. Everytime I've done this they've managed to return it at such sharp angles that it becomes very difficult to even get the ball back.
The most success I've had is long fast dead balls or fast low balls with slight underspin. Next shot will be a top-spin shot or a hard drive. If they return that then it goes into the loop-loop-drop-shot-top-spin-loop-loop sequence. |
