I just saw this while watching one of his matches in the 2010 German Open. The intermediate plies look a little thick and it almost looks like 5 ply wood? Is there a possibility Zhang Jike is not playing an authentic Viscaria? That could explain why he uses the edge tape.

This is another picture I found of his blade. Could it just be the camera playing tricks?

no, they just look darker I think because he uses the blade so much that it is sweat stained heavily on the side plies. The plies around the handle on a used blade always look different than the ones on the side of the blade head.

Well, it might be attributed to number of factors: heavy use of noise reduction, low image resolution, high jpeg compression, distance between the camera and object. Edited by helmsman - 01/16/2011 at 4:29am |

That last picture is a great one to remember and keep if you want to spy a national grade rubber in the future. Ridiculously soft top sheet on it for a dhs rubber. You wont ever see a commercial rubber anywhere near that soft, provincials are close but still not that soft

Yea you guys are probably right. Is it true that he already used a butterfly blade before he got his sponsorship? Then there's really no reason not to play an authentic bty blade. |

Regardless of racket ownership this is a good example of heavy noise filter application so lot's of details are gone. Here is Ma Long's racket used on World Cup 2009 in Moscow - unprocessed 100% crops. Click on thumbnails for full size. Processed images can be seen here:

I think the resolution and depth of field in the lens don't let you see the pores. |

Does anyone knows where i can buy the sidetape he uses? I like the sidetape only on the edge of the blade and not the rubbers. Any ideas?

You can get that tape pretty much anywhere. I have a bunch of that tape (9 mm) from Megaspin, although I prefer these days the thicker tape (12 mm) that also covers the side of the rubbers since it keeps them from chipping. I buy them in 100 foot roles.

But the tape on the Viscaria on Zhang Jike only cover the blade, so that must be a small one. Smaller then the 9mm or the 6mm version right? Or did he just got the wider one and cut it to only fit the blade?

I guess that it's the 6 mm version, I have a similar one around my Virtuoso... |
