I hope it will be a WLQ vs. ML final. Smile
It would be like "the good old days" and we know finals between these 2 great players playing each other would not happen too often from now on. Unhappy

Seems the older generation is just perfecting their game, not fading away. Just imagine when all these guys retire and become coaches, passing on all this culminated knowledge and mad skills.

There are so many of them that are at similar level, Chen Qi is only 26 years old, so who is old, who is young, there is just to many of them.

Chen Qi's loops have just an insane arc to them, it's nuts, just insane, I can't even imagine trying to deal with that level of spin. I don't know what he's using and what he's tuning it with, but it's working...

Chen Qi played very well... In the final his backhand was great and Ma Lin's didn't work well (like in the semifinal against Wang Hao). His chopblocks worked also very well against Wang Liqin in the end of the match!

I do not know about rubbers and tuning but the change from energy and ebvii to a mmaze blade was actually good. Now he has power, control, good balance in the blade.

another good thing is that mmaze blade allows to play that bh even easier than with a viscaria, what it is a weapon game against ma lin.

i would say that besides his training and improvment the blade change was good for him.

Some people peak for short periods, some people are consistent. For whatever reasons, some people relax and don't give that 110% after winning a big title or in pro sports, getting that big contract extension, and they fall off the pace.

Chen Qi played aggressively with a lot of risky topspin shots of the bounce. His backhand was great, it seems to me that all Chinese players improved their backhands since the glue ban.

In my opinion chen qi completely destroyed ma lin. And i didn't realize risky game by chen qi but a lot of power with control. the bh was awesome and he performed some perfect parallel bhs.

besides the ball by chen qi was in the table clearly. there was not lines game.

impressive.

chen qi was so agressive because he had a lot of control. the more control the more off one can be.

I was at the English open for the weekend, and watched all the quater-, semi-, and final matches. This was an wonderful experience. IMHO, the best matches were Wang Liqin vs Xu Xin in the quaterfinals - for the emotional intensity of the match, Wang Hao vs Ma Lin in the semis - for the unbelievable technical precision of shots made, and Wang Liqin vs Chen Qi also in the semis - for amazing looping rallies that made crowds ecstatic. The Chen Qi vs Ma Lin final was also great - Chen Qi was amazing, but shame that Ma Lin wasn't up to his usual form and made too many service mistakes. Bizarrely enough, none of the Chinese spectators cheered for Chen Qi (until after the awards ceremony) - only for Ma Lin ...

A MUST-SEE! Very exciting match with comebacks from both players along the way. And don't even get me started on the rallies... Big smile

100% agree. IMHO, the most dramatic match of the final weekend.

when cq can put the ball  on the table no body can deal with him.  In the past he could not do so coonsistently.

I bet that is because Ma was always behind -- They simply wanted him to wake up. But I'm not sure it would have mattered as Chen was playing too well. This also means WLQ was playing at a very high level to lose after deuce in 7th to Chen Smile

It really des not matter how Ma Lin played when chen Qi was playing at this level. Please, no excuse for Ma Lin. The only reason how Chen won is Chen outplayed Ma. Chen played at an unblievable level in this tournament.

not just this awsome one side spin. Also the next two points 0-3 and 0-4 (1-2 sets) are incredible good. Chen qi wins the rest of the service positioning to do a powerful bh crossing and the next also performs awsome bhs. perfect execution.

What makes this one stood out is Ma Lin pulled out something special with a killer inside out drive from his BH position. Chen counter with a round the net  down the line.. remarkble... Shocked

But I agree that His overall game was excellent.. his BH block down the line then diagonal caught Ma Lin out quite a few times also..

Chen for World Champion? that would be a great surprise..
On evidence of his performance in English Open, it is a possibility. But the big guns like Ma Lin, Wang Hao, and Liqin will step their game up a notch at the WTTC.. Plus Ma Long will be back...

Everyone is going get a mmaze with at least 64 on the backhand. I did, and it plays great!
