This is a thread from 2011. Is a 7-ply all wood 5.8mm or under still relevant in the age of the plastic ball (post 2014)?
I have a Nittaku Barwell Fleet (thin glass fiber behind the top ply so it's really 7+2) that is 6.1mm and nowadays, this would give the feeling looked after by the author, it is OFF-/OFF at 90g and offers a divine wooden feel without polluting vibrations. A top blade in its category.

Yasaka Gatien Extra 7 is a thin 7-ply (discontinued). I have one (a 100g beast). It’s noticeably thinner than my Clipper WRB.

Another vote for Persson Powerplay.
In my opinion it´s the best 7-ply blade available. 5.9mm and weights around 82 to 90g, mine was 87g. It plays almost like a 5-ply blade: a bit of vibration, lots of ball feel, but more power then regular 5 pliers. it´s much softer than traditional 7-ply blades like Clipper, P700 and Xiom Extrem S.

Ultimate is still a little bit slower, softer than Musko and yet faster and more flexible and with more wood feeling than [Virtuoso/Virtuoso+] Edited by tiehwen - 02/04/2011 at 4:32pm |

That must be some super blade which is "a little bit slower" but at the same time "yet faster" than Musko. So is it slower or faster? |

Timo Boll Spirit - The feel and control of an all wood blade with added speed thanks to the arylate-carbon layers. Thickness is only 5.7mm and it is great for the European looping style of play!

Donic Persson Powerplay is 5.8mm.. I think.
Stiga Hybrid Wood is not an all wood blade and usually at 95gr these days, but I have one at 83gr but I think that it is thicker than 5,8mm. Edited by Ironman - 02/04/2011 at 12:38pm |

Oh, I didn' noticed that. Actually, I have both penhold and shakehand version of this blade, and have just measured it: shakehand version is 6.9 mm, and penhold version is actually 6.1 mm. Why would they make different thicknes for penhold and shakehand?

tiehwen I have played with Ultimate for long time though I nowadays play with Musko, and I must say Ultimate is still a little bit slower, softer and yet faster and more flaxible and with more wood feeling than Musko.
You'll love it for sure since it's closer to Virtuoso than Musko.
