Maze is always good value, win or lose he is entertaining, a crowd puller, I guess the organisers realise this.

he tweaked his back at the chinese team trials 2 weeks back, so, i wonder how effective he'll be this time around.

so, if timo is playing well, he has a good chance to win.

as for maze, he must be totally out of shape, so i can't see him beating anybody anytime soon.

I would go for Timo to win with current form/lack of injuries.  And I am sure Michael Maze will put in good performances on his comeback, this is just the start,  he will be determined to make up for lost time.

Pihh, Timo avoided Joo Se Hyuk again, instead Wang Hao should face him and hurt his back again.

also, CCTV5 will show some of it.  they won't stay on for the whole thing, though.

they will start their coverage at tomorrow 2 pm, local time, or 2 am ET, 7 am CET, but they will only stay on for 2 hours.  and then they will show something else on tape-delay thursday at 9:00 am, local time, or 9 pm ET wednesday night or 2 am CET thursday morning.

as for day 2, i dunno what they're gonna do...

WH beat Maze 4-1, Maze played well under the circumstances, some typically outrageous shotmaking from him, some great backhands but didn't use his FH much -   he did look as though he may still be injured, certainly not 100% fit. Hopefully a step in the right direction though!

Huh, watching the Maze match atm, I dont remember him being so backhand dominant before his injury, he's stepping around to take most serves and doing aggressive backhand loops almost any chance he gets, at least so as I've gotten, also I dont remember him having that huge tattoo covering his forehand and another on his bicep on his left arm and a small one on his right wrist.Cant really make out what they are on the video. And he seems to be going for the Timo/Tiago style hair with the little horn thing in the front... I wonder if the tats are real or not, if so that must be what he spent all his time on while he was away, and he can kiss his modeling career goodbye.

I noticed the tattoos as well, so disappointingThumbs Down  I guess if he wasn't already seen as the "bad boy" of table tennis, he will be for sure now.  Maybe he is really trying to embrace the title of the "David Beckham of table tennis."

I'm not so disappointed as curious, I want to know what they are and why he got them. I can only imagine they have some significance being on his playing arm. I thought of doing something similar a year or so ago before I left New Orleans, getting a tattoo on my left (playing) arm. I had the design custom made and ready, knew a couple guys who were covered in tattoos at my school who had connections for good/cheap guy to go to, just chickened out. It's not like ear rings where you can just take em out if you get tired of them, or long hair which you can cut off...

When I injured my ankle and played, I mostly used backhand to play. Playing forehand requires a lot fine movement. And went for bigger shots like Maze did. I don't really like the tattoo on the arm. It looked like some sort of lamp. The only other table tennis player I have seen with a tattoo is Stefanova.

Not sure what the big deal is about his tattoos. Give me a break, each person is free to do with their body what they want. I believe the one on his forearm is the European trophy with some japanese style star burst.

About his PLAY, well that was a hard match to come back to. I was rooting for the guy but he wasn't hitting his opening shots and wasn't moving well. maybe next tourney.

That would be hilarious if it was, back when I had delusions of grandure about my future, I dreamed of doing the same thing, some growing pattern of symbols/trophies or such for tournament wins. Nowdays my dreams go about "Man, it would be awesome if I could get into the finals in the B flight or something if I ever played in a tournament again..."

Yeah, Wang Hao seemed comfortable just letting him miss shots, beating him with his own errors, even during the first game, Maze was going for broke on seemingly every shot and of course missed more often than made it and thus lost.

Maze put in a far better performance against WH than Samsonov.  WH didnt look in great shape himself, maybe he is also carrying the back injury. He played maybe 1 shot that made me go 'wow', Maze 6 or 7.  Re the Tattoos, whatever they signify, why not?

Michael Maze was in 2004, at the age of 22 the Europe top 12 winner.
He was the next European top player and maybe world top.
That feeling developed after he reached the World Champ 1/2 final.
...but then, all misery started, he began to struggle with backage and serious injuries.
He had those problems for over 1.6 years, so his potential was smaller to become top 5 player or higher.
But he faught himself out and became European Champion some years after,
it looked like he was going the same direction again, a new chance...

Then again a table fell on his foot and he was out for over a year again.
I have huge respect for him that he IS playing the tournament again now,
those tattoos I also don't like, but it's his choice.

It is not like Maze tried to use his BH more, but IMO, Wang Hao played to his BH, a standard tactic for Chinese players against left-handed players... Maze is definitely one of the most talented European players but his shot selections is baffling at times. Seems like he mostly choose the hardest shot to make just to look spectacular. If he keeps it more simple and do what must be done, he'll get better result. He can showboat in friendly events or something...

I still have a bad ankle from a football match I played like 15 years ago. So to hope he'll be back 100% is almost impossible, let's just hope he can stay match fit. I always like to watch him play. He needs to sort out his game though. He needs to play more like in the only European Championship he won. Closer to the table and use his FH more..
