Well it really depends on which state you are talking about... States with lots of pros and ex-pros like CA, NY, NJ, TX, IL, etc., the odds of a #50 beating #1 will be smaller than a World #50 beating World #1, simply because the #50 in that state may well be an amateur and the #1 is/was a full-time pro.

If I am ranked 50th in the state, do I have just as much of an odd to beat the state's no. 1 as a World Ranked 50th have to beat the World's no. 1, speaking generally?

Is higher level just more muscle memory?  So is the glory same in pulling off an upset?  There will always be new techniques, but doesn't the game inherently remain the same or does something begin to change as we mature as players?

I personally find local heroes more exciting to watch than world level players.  They have the sense of passion in it that world level players don't..its almost as if the local players are still human..whereas they have transcendent into something else.
