ML was not sick, he was totally outplayed. Would have been 4-0 if Koki did not make some silly mistakes. Koki is going to be a big threat to the chineses in a few years time. He might be already a threat right now. |

Koki is a special talent, despite having a height of only 1.6 meter.

8:11, 11:4, 11:8, 12:10, 5:11 and 11:9 to Koki. Anyone who can take a set from Ma Long 11:4 deserves mucho respect.

Yep, there is a lot of Japanese youngsters looking good, much more and better than the other countries I would say.
But I guess its just take China little time to figure them out, get practice partner copying him and then that is it for Koki and co. So these youngsters still need to improve they game and always ahead of China's TT brain club

The thing is I did not expect an upset like this would happen, i thought the bloody chinese are winning all the time in table tennis. there is no point watching it. Plus the fact that the wife was reluctant to let me go. It was a miss-management from me for sure. Would have been nice to watch Koki kicking Ma long's ass live. videos or it didn't happen
I'm just curious how "bad" Ma Long must have played, because afaik Timo recently beat Koki 3:0 in a very convincing way. I'm not saying Timo is a bad player but I would consider Ma Long as the better overall player.

Great result for Koki Niwa, looking forward to the video. I'm wondering if ML got nervous or froze a bit, but it sounds like he was outplayed by a great talent

Well done Koki Niwa! a good weekend for Japan, they're getting some great results in the Spanish Open too.
But I wonder if this spells the end for Ma Long's Olympic Singles hopes...with ZJK and Wang Hao already qualified, will Liu Guoliang risk taking the chance with Ma Long? The Chinese coaches tend to punish players for these kind of losses by declaring them to be flaky or risky, no matter how much Ma Long proves them the other way. Personally I think it would be a travesty if the world's best player was absent from the singles in London. But respect for Koki Niwa, I hope to see him and the rest of the young Japanese restoring Japan's great history in the game and doing something about China's dominance (which has gone too far for too long, IMHO).

And in the meantime, Ma Long "blanked" Kamal Achanta 4:0, and thus qualified for the Olymipics in 2nd attempt.

I just wonder if this was some political thing from China to let other good young players qualify for Olympics ? Or, he was on fire and Ma Long wasn't preparred, and we mortals have that happen to us.

LET'S WAIT AND SEE......
Despite having yielded a match to Niwa, MaLong did got no worse. It is still possible for MaLong to progress to the Olympics even if 2 more failures occur to him... Playing schedule of the event is wonderfully mild and forgiving. It is clear for me Ma was overly relaaaaaxed at the match, as being not much worried of the match outcome. Let's wait till the Olympics and see if Niwa can withstand as well under harder pressure, in tense competitive environment. |
