So there is the last chance tournament going on for the olympics, Landers and Reed went, Landers has been knocked out 4-0, 4-0, Reed got a game off of Drinkhall, but then withdrew from his next match, anyone know why? Injury? Didn't want to play useless match?

Reed played (and lost) two matches, then withdrew from the third one.
Lebesson and Keinath are already eliminated too, somewhat surprising. itTV is streaming two tables. |

i believe gauzy is out also? he lost to a defender sas lasan who plays here in Portugal, hes good but not that good so thats a big surprise. i see tiago, korbel and propokvov as the biggest favorites now, but surprises will still happen and i think and tiago hopefully will prevail :)

Gauzy can still advance if Lasan beats Pistej. All the French players had a terrible day (Grundisch lost too).
There should be more than 2 spots eventually, but everyone will still have to fight hard to finish as high as possible. |

Wait a minute... Why is Drinkhall even there? Shouldn't the host country have automatic entry or something?

The English association decided to send their players into the qualifying tournaments in order to determine who gets the singles spots. They could have just nominated Drinkhall, but that wouldn't be fair to Pitchford. So it'll be interesting to see who finishes higher this weekend.
UK will also have automatic entry for men's and women's team. |

Can't England get one of the player qualified through the tournament and then also have a host nation direct qualifier? So it is 2 players in the singles etc.

Yes, that seems to be a possibility; the rules say this: "The host NOC shall directly qualify one (1) athlete per gender if not already qualified by ranking or by continental qualification." So if Drinkhall or Pitchford (or Joanna Parker) had qualified in Luxembourg (continental qualifier) that would not have given an extra spot - but if they can do it in Qatar, it would, I guess. |

How many Olympic spots are available from this tournament?
Is it countries that only have 1 singles competitor can try to qualify a second or in the event they have none - can try to qualify 2? For example why did Michael Landers and Barney Reed Jr - enter this tournament? Is it to add another player to USA singles? But this would mean both US and Canada will have 2 players - I thought only 3 total is allowed from North America.

If i'm correct, 2 qualification spots are avaiable from this tournament. As seen here: http://www.ittf.com/Stories/pictures/qualifier_m1.pdf http://www.ittf.com/Stories/pictures/qualifier_w1.pdf Not sure what the entry requirements is for this qualifer though. I assume if there is 2 singles players, maybe they can qualify a 3rd for teams event. But then, there is 14 slots available for Team allocations |

Yes.
3 only refers to the spots guaranteed for North America (through the continental quota) and decided at the North American qualifier. Spots gained at this final world qualifier are extra. The tournament is also important for team qualification. Some players are there not to earn a singles spot (since their country already has 2) but to guarantee the team qualification (and thus their own spot on the team). That's the case for Apolonia for example. |

So why don't the 3rd spot for Teams qualifcation go and have a seperate teams event qualficiation.
They are like taking away spots for "singles" tournament candidate right? Any ways, I still don't understand how a singles event qualification tournament determines if one country can particpate in teams event or not, it is just so ridiculous. It is like say, 50m freestyle determines your entry for 100m relay butterfly..... And then they have 14 spots for Teams Allocation - what is that? another tournament or just some ITTF guy allocating free 3rd player spots? |

And one thing I don't understand,
ITTF website and ITTV have so much coverage on this tournament (even though the website doesn't explain how the format works....) compared to the rest of the Olympic qualifiers. I remember some one telling me that it is the continental organisation responsible and not ITTF for those tournament and if nothing is broadcast or update on news, it is the continental organisations fault and not ITTF. ITTF website had close to zero information during those tournaments, like news updates, live streaming, player list, live scores etc. Wonder what makes Qatar one so special? Maybe Qatar has special friends in ITTF making it happen? |

The qualifying system is posted on ittf.com, you can read it for yourself and answer most of your questions:
http://www.ittf.com/competitions/competitions2.asp?Competition_ID=2003&category=OG Scroll down to "qualification system" (on the right). ITTF did provide some coverage for the continental qualifiers. But this is the world tournament, so obviously it deserves more coverage. |

So what if all the players that qualified fills up all the 2nd and 3rd spot, and we are limited to the most little amount of countries.
Then wouldn't it be silly that the 3rd players took other countries spot for singles event? (Its not like the 3rd player is playing in the singles event in the first place). |

Those spots will go to other players, that's what will be very interesting at the end of this tournament. The exact procedure is complicated and a bit mysterious but by Sunday or Monday ITTF will hopefully reveal how they go about it. |

lol. Thanks Amateur.
Maybe I am just tired, or broken English or not so clued up with TT qualifications any more (was away from the sport from 2007 to 2011). Some how this Olympics qualifcation (every one) is very very confusing. |

There are two spots per country for singles. Michael and Barney wanted to get the remaining US spot, since only Timothy Wang got a US mens spot. But they lost, so that spot is no longer available.
