Eugene Wang - I love Shiono but I gotta go with the regular and the guy who does not have to change time zones.

*** Masato Shiono (or Shiono Masato as listed in US Open) has played US Open twice, in 2010 and 2011.  He did not win and was beaten by the same player - Thomas Keinath.  In 2010 it took Thomas Keinath 7 games to beat Shiono, but in 2011 Thomas Keinath beat Shiono easily in 4 games.  Thomas Keinath is not in this year's US Open.

I don't know if Eugene Wang can get into the final, but if he can and he faces Masato Shiono, then I think Eugene Wang has a very good chance, style match-up I think he is better (at least I hope so.  Go Eugene!)

As late as 1-19-2013 (video uploaded on 3-22-2013), this is a match between Masato Shiono against Hirano Yuki (ITTF WR 285).
Masato Shiono in red shirt.

Looks like the match result was:   3 : 4

==========================
As late as 3-17-2013 (video uploaded on 3-26-2013), only abou 3 months before Japan Open, this is a match between Masato Shiono against Jin Ueda (ITTF WR 127).
Masato Shiono in White shirt. (Why they allowed White shirt?)

Looks like the match result was:   0 : 4

*** Masato Shiono's both opponents are attackers.  Just 3 months before Japan Open, he didn't look that great and didn't look like that he was going to beat Chuang Chih-Yuan, Kenta, Niwa Koki and Chen Chien-An.

On another thread, "Japan Open 2013 Discussion", roundrobin had the following comment:

"Unlike Joo, Shiono twiddles a lot to receive serves and to push.  That caused a lot of problems for his attacking opponents.  He plays more like Matsushita than Joo."
================================================================

May be that's the "Real Key".  The 2 videos shown above, against Hirano Yuki & Jin Ueda (he lost to both of them), Shiono did not twiddle his paddle much in those 2 matches.

Shiono might have praticed a lot of "Paddle Twiddling" before Japan Open.  In Japan Open, as noticed by roundrobin, he twiddled his paddle a lot.  May be that's the "Real Key" that enabled him to be able to upset some of the world's top players.

The following is the final entry list:

Eugene Wang just won the recently concluded Butterfly International Open (in Canada), can he carry the momentum to win the US Open Challenge Series too? (Piligrim has the video of that final, see the other thread.)

Guessing for the winner:  Masato Shiono got 4 votes, Eugene Wang got 2 votes, and the remaining 4 players each got 1 vote (Jens Lundqvist, Primorac Zoran, Robert Svensson, and Tao Wenzhang).

Note:  Masato Shiono is seed #8 and Eugene Wang is seed #3. (According to the entry list).

Guessing for the winner, so far.

ZHENG Jiaqi is not seeded, but she has a very good chance to win this event.

According to Amateur's post on another thread, Jiaqi will be eligible to represent US on 12-5-2015.

The drawing are done for the seeds.
---------------------------------------------

Based on ITTF seeding list, these 2 players are the players to beat:
LUNDQVIST Jens:   Seed #1     Position  1
PRIMORAC Zoran:  Seed #2     Position  64

Based on survey here, these 2 players are the players to beat.
SHIONO Masato:   4 votes   (seed #8)   Position  49  (bottom half, actually 4th quarter).
WANG Eugene:      2 votes   (seed #3)   Position  32  (top half, actually 2nd quarter).

*** Masato and Eugene will not play against each other unless each one wins his half.
*** If that happens, they will play in the final.

Note:  There is a player, Tao Wenzhang, received 1 vote by the survey here.
           Tao Wenzhang is not a seed, he has to play in the qualification group.
           Can a player from the qualification group end up to win the event?
           Yes, it can --- Just look what just happened in Japan Open.
===============================================

On men's side:  There are 16 seeds.  There are 24 qualification groups with 3 or 4 players per group.  The top 2 players from each group will advance to the Main Draw (a total of 64 slots).
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On women's side:  There are 8 seeds.  There are 12 qualification groups with 3 or 4 players per group.  The top 2 players from each group will advance to the Main Draw (a total of 32 slots).

Liang Yonghui is not a seed either (see link below.) He will have to fight in the qualification group.

On women's side (no survey here), my guess is that Zheng Jiaqi will win this event.
Btw, Zheng Jiaqi is not a seed either, she will have to fight in the qualification group too.

I don't think she will. Top 4 seeds are either stronger than her, or very close. Number 1 seed from ROM will loopkill everything and dominate against Zheng.

Shiono is, but one I don't like choppers, second I don't think he will play as well as Japan open, and it just takes one guy who knows how to play choppers to take him down. But he is in it...

I don't know Svensson well enough, Primorac and Lundquist are just too old, other guys are more hungry with equal or better skills.

Primorac is a guy who know how to play choppers.
Anyone know when the live streaming will start? Livestreaming schedule page is not setup on the USATT site.

Here is a video of Liang Yonghui playing against Li Kewei.

Liang Yonghui (the shorter player, a lefty).
Li Kewei (the taller player, with LP on his back-hand).

I don't think he will either, but regardless he is a threat to Wang Zhen. They are old but still good. I personally think Eugene will win it all, but I wouldn't be surprised at all if Tao did.

All factors considered, Eugene Wang should be the favorite, but I would like to give some boost for the fresh faces. It is hard to predict TT results anyway...fun to do though
