This was a great signature until I realised it was overrated.

Unbelievable performance from Ovtcharov, he has proven himself to be the new European no.1 indeed! Such a powerful game, now his FH is as deadly as his BH. Still needs to work on those pesky short returns though, still a bit sloppy in that area.

Boll is still European #1.

That said, I fully agree with you on how much more physical Ovtcharov's game has become.  I thought at some point that Samsonov would complain that his racket was broken and needed to be changed.

Ovtcharov is far more active than Boll lately.  Besides, Boll may have passed his prime.
==================

Now Ovtcharov has no problem to beat Samsonov.  In a different event, months earlier, Ovtcharov beat Eugene Wang quite easily.

If anyone can give Chinese players problems, Ovtcharov will be the one.

I wish.

His main problem is his short game - it is too loose to continuously prevail against the CNT players. His BH push on the FH side is abysmal at his level of play - don't know why his coaches don't try amend it (probably because he commits to the BH sidespin flick too early).

In a discussion on another TT forum, Schlager opined that DO's receiving with his BH on the FH side was due to his liability in receiving serves using his FH - don't know how much truth there was in his opinion.

If he can fix his short game & his mental strength issues, he can truly amass some wins against  the Chinese.

This game did a fine job illustrating the difference in level between DO(Europe's best) and North America's best:

slevin, thank you for sharing. good video.
On the other hand, I was watching Eugene Wang winning Kreanga about 3 month ago pretty confidently 4:1. It was BTFLY open in Canada.
I think Kreanga is about 50 in the world and i guess Eugene is about the same.
All that just to say that world rating reflects real level pretty well - rank 6 wins rank below 50 quite easily

Ovtcharov (Dima) is on a roll of late.  In different events, Dima beat Eugene Wang and Samsonov easily.

Well, the coming up "Men's World Cup", Dima is in that one.
So, are Jike Zhang, Xu Xin and Timo Boll.

Can he beat Jike Zhang, Xu Xin or Timo Boll?
Dima had a poor record against those players, but Dima has improved a lot lately.

His BH over-the-table loop is deadly though, he can always replace the FH push with this if he is fast enough (which he is!), similar to ZJK style of play.

But the sloppy slow and long BH push is definitely a liability to him.

Samsonov looked flat the whole tournament, in both team and individual events.  He would play really well for a game or two and then just struggle.  I realize he's past his peak, but I also think he just wasn't sharp, whether it was physical or focus I couldn't say.
