    Posted: 09/17/2014 at 12:53pm
I'm looking for as much dwell as possible from some short pips I might purchase in the future. Please keep in mind, I'm asking for the softest topsheet and not sponge. I will purchase a topsheet and a custom sponge separately. So any sponge that would normally exist underneath each respective short pip is not applicable.

The list:

Friendship 802
Friendship 802-40
Dawei 388B
Dawei 388B-1
Globe 889
Globe 889-2
Kokutaku 119
Sanwei Ghost

So from this list, which topsheet is the softest, has the most dwell, and would have easier access to the sponge?

Thank you

I only play with Globe, Friendship and DHS SP, and I remember the Globe has a softest pips of the 3.

I don't think the 388b is still approved.

My vote on that list is 802-40, since np8 isn't on there.

Of course you can always get more dwell by going to a longer pip, although less spin.

Yeah I found that out after I posted this. It's been banned since 2008. 388b-1 however is still legal.

No, longer pips are out of the question. I despise medium pips (except for maybe blocking) and while there are many aspects of long pips that I like, it's weaknesses impact my game too much.

Have you tried 388b-1? I've heard it's similar to 802-40's topsheet but softer. If you've tried them both, does this differ from your findings?

anyway it was nice and soft.  not as soft as 802-40 was back then, but perhaps softer than it is now.

They may well still use it in China... just because it's not ITTF approved does not make it 'illegal' to use. Big smile

Which short pip is excellent? 388b-1? If so, than 802-40 is closest.

802-40 has a "soft" top sheet and is really the best one in your list regarding spin.

TSP super spinpips chop is also really good.

Have you tried 388b-1 though? People are saying it's a softer version of 802-40

No, I haven't tried this one from dawei but I've been playing with SP for more than 20 years and I have tried really a lot of them (with different kind of sponges also).
Tibhar speedy soft (very polyvalent), butterfly rein (not produced anymore but still allowed), 802-40, TSP super spin pips chop are my favorite ones. I still have to try the adidas blaze spin, I have one black at home but have had no time to try it yet.

The problem is that it's very difficult to find sheets of anything other than the list I provided in OX. All other short pips come with the sheet attached. I would get super spin pips chop but if I can get something like 802-40 or 388b-1 on a custom 25 degree soft sponge it might be more economical. Then again, I may be paying the extra $20 to get something with better production quality and reliability. I'm not purchasing any short pips until 2015 so I have plenty of time to make a decision on things but I'm just doing my homework on it for the time being.

That's right, it is not obvious to get "non chinese" SP without sponge but it is possible.
Send an email to japsko.se in Sweden. It is maybe possible they can get some non chinese SP without sponge. I also spoke some years ago with a guy who played with a tibhar speedy soft with "defensive" sponge, he got the top sheet from tibhar and then glued himself a 1mm defensive sponge from Japan.
Anyway, 802-40 is a very good choice and is able to produce good spins.

If must need soft top sheet, raw pips is recomonded instead of cooked pips like 802. U may choose Hammond FA Speed or Moristo SP. don't choose yr suggestions.
