I am intrigued by ALC blades because of what happens when I loop hard. I cannot feel the difference between a good shot or a bad shot when I use my Rossi Emotion (they need to put some Artylate in that blade). I played with hurricane 5 long and a Michael Maze and the dference was clear. I could feel the ball again and use the feedback to change my shot.
So I am , while still loving my JRE, looking into an ALC (ZLC too pricy). Everything OFF (jGsmbler too slow) is over $100. Or too head heavy for my comfort (Wavestone). Are there options I am missing? The Andro Treiber K is intriguing. Stradivarius reviews are too mixed. But just curious. ALC, prefer Limbs outer ply but Koto will do, under $100. |

Buy a good used ALC from the forum, they are generally under 100.00 dollars.

Stradivarius - but it didn't feel as balanced as my TB ALC.
You might like a used Innerforce ALC. Limba - limba - alc - ayous - alc - limba - limba. or an ALC clone + hinoki: Galaxy/Yinhe T-7 = hinoki - arylate/carbon - kiri - arylate/carbon - hinoki ** some other options: Xiom Control = hinoki - aramid carbon - kiri - aramid carbon - hinoki Xiom Ignito = hinoki - energy carbon - kiri - energy carbon - hinoki (energy carbon is softer than regular carbon) Edited by DreiZ - 09/20/2014 at 8:32pm |

NL, you can try to make the mod that worthless Der_Echte did in this thread to an 896. Cole must be wondering why he is always running out of the 896.
The Wavestone has a hollow handle, so you can fill it with some weight and move the center of balance lower and play better if you dislike head heavy.

Too bad as if you didn't mind a FL handle: I'm selling a brand new koto-based SZLC blade (with jointless wood & natural glue) for less than $100. The feeling in this blade beats that in a Viscaria / Maze any day.
That piece of worthless info aside, given that you tend to stick to a blade nowadays and focus on coaching, I'd strongly recommend not skimping by putting up the $100 budget and just getting the best ST handle blade that you like (even if it is $25 - $50 more). Whether we determine a blade to be good or not is not just strictly based on the blade composition (so, not all ALC blades with similar composition are equal). What's 'right' is a personal thing - what FL handles that you've tried have you been relatively more comfortable with and what where downright 'bad' for you?

What I realized is that I like to get a lower grip on the handle and that makes my backhand extra spinny but it compromises my forehand control. When I tried the Hurricane Long 5, I loved the flare handle. I have a Butterfly Kazan whose flare handle I also like. I have big hands so it's more the narrow part being able to handle my fingers. I have changed grip to be higher up more consistently, but I realize that if I keep using straight handles right now, I am never going to keep the grip consistently because there is nothing to prevent me from slipping down all over again. If the Kazan wasn't so fast, I would have considered using it. I also have this bad habit of buying blades in pairs so that my backup is very similar to the original. That is why I want something lower cost - so that if I buy 1, then at least I don't overspend and if I can, I usually get two at the same time. |

I've never tried HL5 or Kazan so can't help on your handle requirements portion of ALC blade choice.

For those of us on a budget, one nice off- blade (Flared) is the Gambler Mega Weave AC blade ($40):
|

(1) Juic SBA (Fl, 85 g) with Bluefire JP3 (red max) on FH and 0.6 mm DR N Desperado on BH; (2) Yinhe T7 (Fl, 87 g) with Bluefire M3 (red 2.0) on FH and 0.6 mm 755 on BH.

Yeah, but it's OFF- and you have the only review out there... If I knew it wasn't bouncy and played like my current blade, I would feel better trying it. On the other hand, Gambler quality control isn't always the best even though zeropong tries... |

Definitely it isn't bouncy, I promise. EDIT: Buy one and write a review, that way people will have better information.

stradivarius wasn't like an ALC imo. maybe the output, but the feel was like a dampened primorac carbon. i liked the handle finish a lot but at the time they were pretty close in price. i'd still go with tb alc

Donic Baum Espirit is not bad at all, especially for the price. Slightly slower than a TBS. Comfortable handle. 65 bucks at Paddle Palace, probably can be had for less than that.
I would not say that a Strad is particularly cheap and I agree, the weight and balance were a bit odd to my tastes, anyway. http://www.paddlepalace.com/Baum-Esprit/productinfo/SDBES/ |

Somehow, I knew you would write that, Baal. I remember when I was kind of shopping for a blade like that you had some good comments on the Espirit.

By list, the composition is exactly like the Strad:
Koto-ayous-aramid carbon-kiri-aramid carbon-ayous-koto Here's a good review by ttping85: http://mytabletennis.net/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=56475&title=donic-baum-espirit-vs-butterfly-alc-blades-vs-misc If you want a relative comparison of this blade vs the XVE, NL, you can try PMing him as he's tried both. Tibhar Freitas, maybe Stratus CB.
TSP Campione - should be similar to discontinued Besty but cheaper. Btty Arylate blades (AL, without carbon) used to be cheaper, don't know if the difference is significant. |

@ NL - To be honest I brought a M. Maze ALC to try out the limba feel and it's got me...
Obviously softer feel than ZLC... But not abstract by any means... I also have down the handle loose grip and the ST handle is the best I've ever held... Absolute quality... FL is not the same (one mate has FL) for a ST preference player. AN is acceptable (another playing mate has AN)... Touch, blocks loops n drives like a dream and mates with T05 like ... <Insert quote> ... |

closest I would say with better feel for me was tibhar marcos frietas. its difficult to find now especially if you want two. Baum espirit or something from the burn series might be a good option as well.
