    Posted: 09/30/2014 at 3:08pm
Hello Everyone,

I've been away from the forum and table tennis for about 4 years due to heart and other health-related issues (I have survived 5 open heart surgeries and have a mechanical heart made of the same carbon fiber material as what is contained in your table tennis carbon paddles) but I'm back and currently being coached by Larry Hodges and a gentleman by the name of Jimmy Pelletier who is a former student and protege of the great Marty Reisman.  Both Larry and Jimmy have helped my hardbat and sandpaper games so much, despite the fact that I was diagnosed last year with Parkinson's Disease at the young age of 39 and have a shaky right hand and stiff muscles that affect my ability to play table tennis but I continue to fight on, and are both helping me prepare for the U.S. Nationals in Las Vegas this December.

Anyhow, more info about the link between how I use my medical experiences to inspire others to play table tennis for example can be found in my recent USATT feature in the link below...

The 17 paddles in my collection include the following:
Hardbats
-----------
* Hock 3 ply #74
* Brand New Hock 3 ply #74 with original rubber signed by Marty Reisman
* Super Hock - This is a rare 6ply Hock made by Don Varian for Larry Hodges who recently gave the
paddle to me to help stabilize my hand due to my Parkinson's Disease.  Hands down my favorite
paddle I play with now for hardbat.
* Dunlop Barna Hardbat from early 1960s
* 2nd Dunlop Barna Hardbat from early to mid 1960s

Sandpaper
-------------
* Table Tennis Nation Paddle - 9ply with 2 carbon plies and 7 wood plies
* Tatco Flash
* Two Tom Ryan custom made Navin-branded paddles, one with a carbon fiber inlay on the handle
done as a tribute to my carbon fiber heart.
* Jack Carrington paddle (originally a hardbat paddle that I purchased from a British hardbat player in
England, but I wound up removing the old red pimpled rubber and replaced it with sandpaper.
* Dunlop Barna Maxply Fort paddle converted to sandpaper from sponge

Sponge
---------
* 1980s Stiga Clipper Tranas - I can see why collectors consider this paddle a holy grail of sorts...
definitely a great paddle to hit with and I have Tenergy 64FX rubber on this paddle now.
* 1960s Stiga Kjell Johansson with original rubber
* 1960s Stiga Hans Alser with original rubber
* Dunlop Super Barna with original pimpled sponge rubber
* Slazenger Challenge with original turquoise blue sponge rubber
* GKI Kung Fu (Indian) paddle I got as a gift - hits decent with Tenergy 05FX rubber on this paddle
   now.

It's GREAT to be back in the table tennis world playing the game I love with such a wonderful community that the table tennis world community truly is.  When I step up to the table to play my games, win or lose it doesn't matter because I'm just grateful to have defied the odds against me to survive my numerous surgeries to have the privilege of playing our great game... so no matter what, I've already won before the game even begins.  Smile

Thanks for looking!

Haha!  I think I learned what the heck an "EJ" even is from reading your posts... a true credit to how informative they are.  LOL

Yeah the folks here definitely seem very friendly and indeed a great place to hang out.  Would you say there is a good mix of sponge, hardbat, and sandpaper players?  Just so you know, I respect ALL forms of this great game and I highly encourage folks here to try out the other forms of table tennis that you haven't tried before.  I started off playing sponge for the majority of my life and have taken up hardbat and sandpaper full time now for the past 4 months.  When playing at my local table tennis club, I always keep extra hardbat and sandpaper paddles with me so that the sponge players I play can experience hardbat and sandpaper, and everytime it's a great response from them, particularly playing with sandpaper.

Nice blades, but the Stiga Johansson and Stiga Alser are not from the 60`s.
- Johansson World Champion is from the beginning of the 70`s
- Alser Allround Wood is from the end of the 70`s.

My apologies for the typo... you are absolutely right that it was from the 70s.

Sorry for the late reply... none of my paddles are for sale at the moment and I'll definitely need to update my post here with my new acquisitions.

It has been a while since I last posted, and since that time I made history earlier this year as the first athlete in history to actively compete with Parkinson's Disease on the Olympic/Paralympic level when I traveled with Team USA to compete in Barcelona. The paddle I used in this historic debut was my 1st generation Butterfly Viscaria straight handle. It still is one of my favorite paddles for sure.

From a pure comfort and looks standpoint, my other favorite paddle that I acquired this past year is an old Butterfly Heiloway Anatomic paddle. It is the most comfortable paddle I've ever held, which is important because with my Parkinson's Disease and the hand shaking I have, a comfortable handle helps my condition.

I'm also playing with a 1st generation Butterfly Keyshot flared handle that I purchased brand new in the box from a collector earlier this year. All 3 paddles I'm using Butterfly Tenergy 25 on the forehand with long pips on the backhand (Tibhar Grass D.Tecs on 2 of the paddles and Dr Neubauer Allround Premium on the Butterfly Heiloway Anatomic paddle).

Nice collection. I will gladly trade both my Zhang Jike ZLC Super , few months in the box, and my XIOM Hayabusa Zi for your Stiga Hans Alser All round wood flared Blade..lol....or buy it?...I know you may not want to sell it...but I wish , cos I have tried almost every modern blade and this blade I picked up accidentally from someone is the best feel of blade I Wat to play with...but can't seem to find it anywhere...Maybe you can solve this for me?...thanks.

Hey there! I've actually gotten rid of most of those paddles you see and I've acquired some other paddles since then including the coveted Viscaria 1st gen S T paddle, Butterfly Heiloway Anatomic paddle, 1948 Barna paddle with ivorine Barna handle inlay, and an old Macrossen paddle from the 1930s. Nothing for sale at this time.
