Sad news, if true:

They've made some really good equipment over the past few years (in conjunction with existing manufacturers, obviously).  Tenzone Ultra remains one of my favorite rubbers, and the Hypertouch is an amazing blade.  Very hard to be profitable in the TT world, even for a powerhouse like Adidas.

Will be interesting to see what happens to the sponsored players - Sabine Winter, Jon Groth etc.

Wow, I had not heard this. They stopped their sponsorship of TT Australia as well, so perhaps this is why...

man it is so sad. Maybe because the market is too congested with brands.

Adidas has one of the best qualities for a euro rubber. I think Tibhar has the best quality and performance among euro rubber but only Adidas comes close. It is sad to see them go.

Yeah, I'm gutted to be honest.  Their products were excellent and they brought a much-needed global brand to the TT scene.  Their involvement added legitimacy to TT as an international sport (I know that this is clear to us, the players, but in the eyes of the general public TT can still be seen as a game instead).

Yogi - the link I provided is the only reference I can find to this.  Any chance you can get in touch with your Adidas contact to confirm?

UNWEALTHY PEOPLE, NO BUYERS.

Table Tennis is mostly a childplay, just a leisure trifflig. And the children/youngsters/school wanglers are not whealthy buyers.
You can`t make some substantial money income through cattering products to the unwealthy sport. No decent profit, anyway.

Dear Igorponger,

You are mistaken.
TT is the second Most Popular Game in the world!
It is a fact. The world is much bigger than you can imagine. Just keep your eyes wide open, please.

Anyway, Adidas have produced many outstanding TT equipment so far which are among the best so they are about to leave us in the lark...hope they won't.

Good. From what I heard, Adidas basically tried to cuckhold all the existing table tennis brands, thinking that they would take over the scene and dominate, glad it backfired.

Not surprised to hear they are pulling out. Just not much money to make in this sport, especially for a big global company like Adidas.

Cmsbeltran, fyi, greenmaster fitness got the license from adidas to use the brand name.it is not the adidas company itself. You would get the picture that the licensee would pay royalty fees to adidas and it is not a small amount.

OK, so Adidas made the profits while Greenmaster took the losses. Shows the power of a brand name.

Since I first heard that Adidas was joining the scene, I always worried that it would just be a trial venture. It kept me from trying their rubbers. What a drag for those who have adopted their rubbers.

One product, ESN ,that "transforms" to Adidas, Andro, Tibhar, Donic, Joola, Xiom ,Nittaku.
I'm only worried for the German employees and country representatives.
Adidas P7 is very popular, by the way.

This is sad news indeed. Just when i am starting to like their blades.

Are there any other companies that offer the same quality at Adidas' price range?

Incredible! I have a hard time believing they just throw the towel without a better fight; I mean what have they done for the sport besides a few rubbers, paddles and sponsoring a couple players?
Joola is trying hard with their American pro tour and their engagement is genuine; Tibhar is huge in France and Germany and so is Donic in Europe.
I always saw Adidas coming in to play as a sort of bigger, global Killerspin: No tt culture...a sort of ping pong Frankenstein born in the mind of a mad marketing guy.
Now when tt love appears to be a bit more high maintenance than expected the fiancée runs away...
I did not care when they came in and I care even less about them leaving.

If this is true, then a totally meek and wrong approach by Addidas IMO...

With their brand power they could have sponsored big statement tournaments that appeared on Sky world wide...

This would have probably resulted in "New" customers seeing their reputable brand associated with TT and promoted the sport and their market share simultaneously...

Instead they appeared looking for a market share with nothing to offer TT as a whole...

Surprisingly, less presence than Xiom in the sport. ...

Exactly my thoughts...they thought they could grab a piece of the cake on the cheap and as soon as they figured it would take a bit more commitment they gave up.
I am 0-2 down in games and facing 5 match points so I can't make it and I will not even try; I just quit...

not a real surprise to me.
For selling their stuff, the products have to be widely available.
But none of the big sellers in europe like TT11, Dandoy or spinfactory,... were carrying their stuff.

You can't compare Adidas with specialized TT brands like Joola or Tibhar - completely different profiles. It's not about being "genuine" or not.

And Killerspin is again something different. Born out of Robert Blackwell's love of table tennis and desire to make the sport sexier in the American context.

With Adidas leaving, TT is back to being the province of specialists, for better or worse.

I will rethink the idea of selling my Hypertouch Tongue
But, I will have a bigger problem, I find P7 to be THE BEST rubber for my play, and really don't have a clue what the right replacement could be Confused

Same reason Adidas did not make any money on TT and is now quitting - the market is already saturated with products that are next to impossible to differentiate one from another.
