This relates to North America as i know it, it just happens Jeremy is featured for TT this time around. It's a local/national Chinese  station and this was done in Cantonese, sorry i could not provide an English Transcript or version of the show.

Most of the tuition is subsidized by the government/taxpayers 50%+ and with the new legislation certain students will have no tuition fees.

this kid has a bright future lol, in order to qualify for Olympics, he needs to defeat Eugene Wang and other higher level players in the Olympic qualification tournaments in 2020

No he doesn't. Unless the qualifying format changes, he would just need to be at the level of the US players, and that's feasible. Theriault almost qualified this year.

so you meant Theriault lost to a US player? else it would be 2 players from Canada and 1 from US going to Olympic this year instead of 2 from US and 1 from Canada?

Yes, Theriault was eliminated by Kanak Jha - he was up 5-0 in game 7 but lost the next 11 points. That also eliminated the Canadian team and qualified the US team instead. If Theriault had won that match, he only needed to beat Timothy Wang in the final.

Yes, and maybe that's why Theriault has now retired... On the other hand, it made for a nice story with Kanak Jha as the youngest male player in the TT competition and the youngest athlete on the US Olympic team.

In any case, Jeremy Hazin seems to have a Kanak-like kind of focus and discipline and may indeed have a shot in 2020.

Not all of them will be eligible for the Olympics. They need at least to get citizenship in time for the trials. In 2012 Eugene Wang didn't have his in time, which is why he couldn't qualify for singles.
