China starts selection of players for world championship. No Zhang Jike or Ma Long though...? Zhang Jike I know is trying to get back but Ma Long?

  "Both Ma Long and Zhang Jike already have spots guaranteed in Shenzhen. Meanwhile the coaching staff will select two more players to battle it out for a place in the team."

The odd year is for Individual event, while the even year is for the Team event.
So, the 2017 WTTC is for individual event.

The number of players allowed appears to be the same as previously.  I am doing some Copy/Paste here.
========================
Each Association shall be entitled to enter 3 men and 3 women players in each singles event, with one additional player ranked in the top 100 and one additional player ranked in the top 20 of the ITTF World Ranking list issued in January 2017 to a maximum of 5 men and 5 women. The maximum entry for each association is 2 men’s doubles, 2 women’s doubles and 2 mixed doubles; all players may be different.
------------------------------------------
In doubles events, both players may be from different Associations.
-------------------------------------------
The host Association may enter up to 6 men and 6 women in each singles event, 3 men’s doubles, 3 women’s doubles and 3 mixed doubles regardless of ranking.
=========================

No, it is far more than Shenzhen.  They don't need to play in Shenzhen.

Both Ma Long and Zhang Jike already have guaranteed spots in Düsseldorf for the Liebherr 2017 World Table Tennis Championships.

Excerpt (in Chinese) :  今年的直通赛有哪些看点呢?一是马龙、张继科免赛,直接获得世乒赛资格,这两位现役大满贯,已经不需要什么成绩来证明自己了,让他们参赛,是众望所归.

Unless CNT will send 12 male players to WC Embarrassed

sry, you need to read the article few times to under it. ML and ZJK don't need to play the RR only. 14 players will play the RR. Top 8 finishers will enter the TOP 12 selection tournament (Top 8+ ML / ZJK + 2 coach recommendations)

==========================
This sentence in the article (about mid-way in the article) is wrong:
今年的直通赛有哪些看点呢?一是马龙、张继科免赛,直接获得世乒赛资格,这两位现役大满贯,已经不需要什么成绩来证明自己了,让他们参赛,是众望所归。
---------------------------------
The above wrong sentence basically says that Ma Long and Zhang Jike don't need to play (or waived from playing) and already directly qualified to play in the WTTC.
=======================================
Then near the end, the article says that Ma Long and Zhang Jike will join the top 8, plus two (as yet unnamed players) to duke it out.  A total of 12 players.

So, Egghead is right.  The sentence in the middle of the article is plainly wrong, that tricked me.
Thanks to Egghead.

I am not sure what exactly he's done to deserve that automatic pass. Has he won any tournaments at all in the past two years? Why isn't Xu Xin - for instance - getting that kind of pass?

Maybe the China Open though I guess you consider that Domestic?

In any case still one of the most captivating players in the world. He is too good not to be one of the top 6 if healthy. I mean he almost won the team trials for the WTTTC last year.

=================

Agree with you Zhang Jike doesn't deserve it.
LGL likes him, that counts.
-----------------

China can send 5 players (for singles).
Out of that 12 players (in the 2nd Round), LGL will reserve 1 or 2 slots for the coaching committee to choose.  If ZJK gets beat and can not earn the RIGHT to go by playing - he still gets to go to WTTC.

That's the way it is.

Well China Open is certainly international as other countries can participate. I honestly don't remember if he was there or not...

I think they are gonna give him the pass until he start losing in a major, WTTC, OG or World Cup, be it individual or team. He hasn't got any opportunity to lose in any of those events yet, so he'll keep getting passes LOL

ZJK is still the CNT players with the most achievement, so it is not a surprise he got a pass.

IMO his days of being a champ are over, mainly because he doesn't have the hunger for the win and glory anymore and not because there are better players out there.

Actually ma long is currently the greatest player of all time. He's the only one with a "complete" grand slam. Zhang Jike also said that ma long is too good and that he can't beat Ma Long (no surprise there). But he's still good enough to beat everybody else when he wants to lol and has the second-best achievements on the team. Xu xin has nothing except one World Cup title.

It is hard to say who has the best achievement without a standard. But ZJK and ML are definitely the two "leaders" of CNT. As for XX, I think that that is about it for him unless a miracle happens to him.

XX was second, and FZD was the winner.

The chart only shows the names for play, not order of winning and losing.
