So far I have found Yiyong Fan who had a high rating of 2859. I'm not counting international players who come over for just one tournament and who are given a 3000 rating for seeding purposes. Also need to remember that Usatt ratings only go back to 1994 online so players like Danny Seemiller and Eric Boggan peak ratings can't be found anymore

Bojan Tokic was as high as 2836.

Current USATT site only shows people with active membership, so you can't simply look for Top 25 'current' ratings - I had to hunt for Tokic and other currently inactive players.

Also - at the high end it's really inaccurate - Ma Long could be playing every USATT tournament and is unlikely to get above 2950 or so (assuming other highest competitor is around 2700) - no players to get points from. Hey, Gacina ended up 2677 after one tournament last fall - and he is/was WR18 at the time. I'm pretty sure he is a bit better than that.

Thats why I'm only looking for players who have significant tournament history and not players when played in only one tournament

who give a shit about this ratings!?
what rating actually show?
they only matter if you play World Ranking.
people who got experience in this game can judge your level just by seeing you how you hit the ball for around two minutes.

I was just replying to the question asked which was about USATT rating and not world ranking. So take a chill pill and relax.

I don't know if this is ratings folklore or not, but I heard early in my TT career that there was an older rating system where the winner gained a minimum of 1 point per victory, no matter the rating spread. Under this system, DJ Lee went undefeated for years and achieved a rating over 3000.

Again, this may have been misinformation and I was too naive to challenge it or I could've taken it out of context from a response to why the rating system awards 0 points to the winner with a high rating spread, for example. Perhaps someone answered "if the winner always gained 1 point, then DJ Lee would've been over 3000." Can someone who played in the 1970's can confirm or reject this?

If you take into account the rating inflation, Kim Taek Soo's 2900 achieved in 2000 is probably the highest rating ever.

I played in the early 1970s (1970-1974) at clubs both in Cleveland and Columbus, Ohio where D.J. Lee played, and as best I remember, heavyspin, D.J. Lee's rating in 1970, as the best tt player in the U.S., was a bit over 2500.

From 1975 to 1981 I worked as a data entry operator during the evenings at a scientific institution called Chemical Abstracts Service, so I couldn't play much tt except on weekends during that time.  I don't recall, either in the early, middle, or late 1970s a rating system where a player could gain at least one point per victory, and I'm just guestimating that by 1980 D.J.'s rating was still probably around 2500 and some change.

Nope.  That list is from the USATT database which includes all players currently active or inactive who has ever played in a USATT sanctioned tournament. Their rating was calculated after the last tournament they played.  You can get details of their tournament performance at the USATT website.

The issue with the list is a majority of the players listed may have only played a handful of tournaments in the U.S., where as all the players I listed had years of tournaments and think that's a better gauge to determine what the highest rating is/was.

HeavySpin,

I can reject it as it was USATT Ratings Director Dan Simon that added the 1 point per match winner and it was actually in the early 80's.

They dumped the concept after a very short time as ratings were fluctuating upward at a very quick rate.
