Was looking up large ball tournaments and came across this.
34th Shimizu Large Ball Table Tennis Seminar(5/14/2017): MS Open The younger dude turned 32 just a week ago and wrote about this encounter on his blog. BTW, "Kreanga" reached the semifinal whereas the young dude made it to the semifinal in MD open. Edited by zeio - 07/18/2017 at 4:08am |

The fact that the younger dude keeps putting the ball in the same area of the table where the older guy is parked waiting helps a lot. No doubt the older guy is still in good shape and has good execution, but the younger guy hardly tested the older gents footwork with his poor placement tactics. Should have tried putting the ball to either extreme side or vary the length of the shots. Also side spin loops help open the court a little.

People easily reach 100 years of age in Japan. With this in mind, he is still relatively young. |

There are 8 or 10 over 70 guys in the U.S. who play at that level with a smaller ball. You didn't say what size the ball is. Could it be the 44?

While one's choice of equipment definitely influnces how one plays the sport of table tennis, I'm not sure precisely what you meant with respect to what you wrote. At any rate, a fairly sapient observation from a forum member who is only five years old. Presumably (I don't know), the septuagenarian and the thirty-two year old gentleman were using equipment with reasonably similar characteristics. That is, presumably both were using inverted rubbers of some kind, probably, though not necessarily, unboosted. Does your statement imply that the older player could not possibly have defeated his opponent with any other equipment save for that he used to defeat him? Or is your statement, remarkable for a five year old's understanding of table tennis equipment, meant to be understood that other factors, such as experience, training, coaching, practice, technique, strategic and tactical knowledge, and participation in tournaments both important and not so important are of no consequence? I happen to agree that equipment has played a large role in changing what was once an attractive and comprehensible sport that even non table tennis spectators could enjoy, but I would not go so far as to say that a septuagenarian defeating a thirty-two year old is proof positive that nothing else but equipment matters as far as table tennis is concerned. My question, too. There is a reference to big ball, but not its size.

Just to get everyone up to speed. Large ball is how the 44mm ball is called in Japan. Whenever you see any videos with the phrase "ラージボール"(Katakana for large ball) in the title, you'd understand it is for the 44mm ball at 2.4g. Played with a net of 17.25cm(as opposed to 15.25cm), and short pips only. Deuce only goes to 12:12, then whoever gets the next point takes the game. Started in collaboration by the JTTA and Nittaku in 1988, it was originally aimed for beginner and senior players. Edited by zeio - 07/20/2017 at 2:35pm |

This changes the game tactics quite a bit. Someone's suggestion of side spin loops to widen the table isn't going to work nearly as well as with the usual equipment. And I can see a real benefit to big strokes ala Kreanga.

FYI, at the National Large Ball Tournaments 2017, held two weeks ago, "Kreanga"(Choutarou Ichikawa) won in the MS Class A 70 and above.
