I have to ask: where did this data come from? And what is meant by "1st ranked blade"? This certainly isn't a list of best selling or what the pros use.

I would exclude the blades that have less than 20 reviews... not enough for this small "study" imo.

I guess what the OP was trying to show was how inflated and difficult to use ratings of table tennis blades are?

Whenever I read blade reviews it seems to me as though only the people who love a blade (or maybe are somehow involved in selling it?) leave reviews.

Nothing wrong with someone reviewed and input a rating for some blade or a rubber. If everyone playing table tennis leave this kind of notes, the resulting DB can be called big data and many things can be deduced and harvested from it.

Same as this forum and other table tennis forums. posts are published daily, and many of them are useful for future reference.

I agree with DreiZ's comments above, for this specific list, the ratings of above 20 reviews could be quite useful.

I figure Tabletennisdb is a lot like wikipedia... good place to start to get an idea of what's what.

There's a million variables that aren't kept constant in things like these, so yeah, take everything with a massive pinch of salt. Anything with under 20 reviews is even worse.

People generally will post if they have a really good experience as they want to share it.

Maybe if you have a really bad one too, but people hate admitting they made a bad choice / giving up on their purchases too, so won't want to admit defeat online.

The level of players leaving reviews is also super relevant. A rubber /review left by a 1300 player is likely not super informed or applicable as to a 2300 player.

Expectations vs actuality. People have varying expectations due to price / brand etc. A $50 blade might have a very high rating because it is a very good $50 blade, but a $200 blade is likely deserving of a higher rating in terms of actual performance.

Also, again, the expertise/judgment of players leaving reviews is highly variable. Measuring things such as a spin/speed is largely subjective as is, let alone things such as throw angle and hardness. Furthermore, most players are only using 1 blade with the rubber they've tried / 1 combination of blade/rubber, which is not ideal when reviewing a blade or rubber. i.e. if it doesn't suit their style/combination they've set, its 'not good' which is of course, rubbish.

Lastly, a rubber that appeals to a wide variety of styles is likely gonna be highly reviewed, whereas a specific rubber catering to only a few styles, but doing so really well, will likely have poor reviews and never see the light of day if the initial reviewers end up posting as such. For example, I believe rubbers like MX-P fit a lot of playstyles, hence its the most bought rubber in '16 and '17 on TT11 [People try their friends bat with MX-P and then buy it / try it due to the hype and end up buying it again when they replace it], but its possible there is a specific rubber that caters specifically for their gamestyle, but one that doesn't have nearly as broad an appeal.

I think Table Tennis Database would be much more accurate if it gave rubber weights and hardness as measured, not as perceived by the user.  As for blades, some people like vibration, others don't.  Their ratings differ on any given blade.  I do appreciate when an experienced player gives a solid evaluation of a product as Patrick Hrdlicka does for Table Tennis 11.

All those ratings are PPLs guesstimation and nothing more. Not exactly scientific. Just rough impressions.
How would you put a number on such a thing as "CONTROL"?!?

Probably yes.
A blade doesn't need to be super fast and/or super hard to be good for a player. So it makes more sense it being a class on its own.

There are also so aspects to be mentioned. Usually the expensive blades (150 euro or more) are bought especially by experienced players so the ratings for those blade are more "consistent" than for a blade costing 20 E which almost any new player may buy without being sorry for spending money. A new player will be impressed almost by any blade he plays with.

Nevertheless there is also another group of players who buy a blade, they don't like it and they use the ratings above while others just don't want to admit they made a mistake buying a certain blade.

Yeah, like me who has an OSP Virtuoso+ and the Korbel that my son plays with, they're both great blades. But if I compare them to my Violin it feels like I'm hitting the ball with a brick. If I would have rated them right when I bought them (before I got the Violin I would have rated them higer than if I would rate them now)

For big data to useful, they have to be reliable, not just big. I don't have any particular axe to grind but I can't help noticing the blades that are missing from this list (widely used by pro players) -- and also vice versa.
