In the celluloid days, 2-3 outer plies seemed to dominate racquet sales...

Limba
Koto
Hinoki

Players preferred the feel of these plies (resonance?) with the celluloid ball. I'll call these "legacy outerplies".

Where the poly/seamless/abs balls feel so much different (from each other, from the celluloid ball), has anyone noticed better feel with an outerply that was non-legacy?

Coming back to the game from celluloid, I have only tried different rubber to compensate for the lack of spin and strange behavior of these balls...

I think the outer ply has to match the rubber. Hard sponges need a harder outer ply for me.

I prefer koto/harder outer ply blades and find it easier to use with the plastic ball. Before 2013/14 I used to use the mmaze which was awesome but made the switch to Viscaria when the plastic ball came.

One of the coaches who is prefers soft setups had to switch from his mmaze to tb alc as well, he uses 05fx though! Just anecdotal so take it with a grain of salt.

I have tried Aspen and Mahogany outerplies on a few prototype BBC blades, Aspen is in between limba and koto, whereas mahogany is in between limba and hinoki

Wavestone St with Illumina 1.9r, defender1.7b

Someone changes from koto to a softer outer play because of the plastic ball?
