    Posted: 04/26/2018 at 11:00am
A friend wants to try out a OFF- / Low OFF all-wood blade but does not like the hollow feel in blades like Virtuoso, Acoustic, Violin, etc.

Could someone suggest an appropriate blade please? Thanks.

Are you sure that it has non-hollow feel?

Isn't it limba-limba-ayous-limba-limba? I haven't tried TSPW, but I know of no blade so far with that composition that does not feel hollow. Probably to do with the core wood.

Either ways, I'll let him know.

Looking for more suggestions!

+1 for the Allround Evolution. It´s the classic 5-ply blade, with a bit of vibration, moderate speed and tons of control.

He might like Darker Hinoki blades. They have a solid feel without being too stiff. I played with 5P-2A for a long time.

If he likes fast and stiff blades, I am very happy with the Mazunov. It is heavy though.

Maybe he should make the switch to ZLF, ALC or maybe a thin 7 ply since he doesn't like the feel of 5 ply all wood.

Avalox P900, slightly faster with 9-ply's power,
but looping and control like 5-ply.

Last week I tried Xiom Offensive S and It was surprisingly solid and stiff for a 5 ply / 6mm blade like that. I was looking for something with more flex and catapult so I sold it.

Even P700 that I'm using now has more flex and it's softer compared to Xiom Offensive S.

Interesting....

I never would’ve made the connection of Violin or Acoustic feeling hollow. When I think of hollow, I think of Stiga’s Offensive Classic or Boll All+.The Violin flexes under pressure and Acoustic is fairly stiff for the most part, but I wouldn’t call them hollow.

Maybe we should focus on an understanding of what hollow means to the player? Sure, it is a subjective term. When I think of hollow in the sense of table tennis equipment, its a little bit feeling, but mostly sound. The feeling is like a sharp pulse in the palm area upon contact and the sound is .... well.... hollow.

The one thing I can think of that your friend might find in common between the Violin and Acoustic is felt on hard contact shots like drives or loop drives. That would be flex. Violin flexes a lot, like a whip, whereas the Acoustic is much less noticeable.

To rid of flex, select a thicker ALL wood blade, 6mm+. The hollow sound can be lessened by selecting a heavier weight blade or using heavier rubber.

stratus Powerwood does not feel hollow, however it is not off-, it is a solid off, it has no hollow feel at all, but it is pretty quick, better for looping than xiom offensive s, infinity, korbel, I would say it is the best 5 ply looping blade under £40 you can get.

There are a few solid feeling blades that have been determined to have hollow handles as well. Most notably Timo Boll Spirit, ALC and ZLC, Michael Maze and Primorac. I am certain there are many more yet to be discovered. (Waiting on players to break or x-ray them)

All of them happen to be carbon blades though...

My Hurricane Long 3 feels great. I don't think it feels hollow.

Blades I've tried for comparison with the same rubbers:

Timo Boll ALC and Interforce ZLC.

The Hurricane Long 3 is wood only. That said, I haven't tried any other wood blades except one I bought for my brother. And that had an open hollow handle. It felt hollow.

Never mind... I´ve read some recommending Clipper, P700 and others very far from OFF-.
I don´t think people pay attention on what the OP wants.

The 3 blades mentioned in the OP are considered by many as the top dogs of the 5-ply all wood blades.  They feels hollow as compare to what blades?  Many players moving from composite to all wood complaining of the hollow feel, but in time it goes away, the hollow feel is due to a slightly off timing.  Is this a case?  If so, move back a little, so you have more time to time the contact, add more power to each shot, and see if that help.

What was OFF with a celluloid ball is more like OFF- with a 40+ ball, and that is why I recommended a Clipper.
