HZW always with the illegal serve. I guess old habits die hard. Umpire doesn't care though. Good on Kaden to play through it and win.

these type of what you call illegal serves are the easiest to see the ball contact Wink it's not behind the body or anything so stop nagging dude.

Agree.

It is not behind the body, not behind the head, and not behind the dropping arm (non-playing arm).

Great match, thx Smile;
 don't understand why HZW kept scratch his butt. Also, too bad, OP should hide the players face and "Rating Estimation" Tongue

Ok, if you guys want to ignore the rule and pretend HZW doesn’t get an advantage from it, then sure why not. Fortunately, Kaden’s overall game was better.

I was curious about this post because ZWH has a long standing reputation for questionable serves, so i re-watched the match at 1/4 speed.  What I see is:

1) He cups his hand pretty severely before tossing.

2) He throws the ball back to his rear hip.  It isn't obvious that there is so much horizontal movement because his toss is so high, so I just watched where it ended up.  Of course, super-high tosses like that don't always come down where you expect them, even for the pros.  When it comes down too far in front of his body, then he moves up so the ball still comes down near his rear hip.

3) He doesn't move away his free arms until almost the moment of impact.

Of these, #2 is probably the most advantageous because it helps to hide the ball behind the body. However, #1 and #3 would be the easiest to call if the umpire were so inclined.  I'm assuming that no umpire in a minor American weekend tournament would have the guts to fault a famous professional player, but he should have.

I know that we've all had some pretty strong disagreements about which pros do or do not use illegal serves. And the truth is that every pro seeks to gain every bit of advantage that he's allowed and they understand (and expect) that every other pro is doing the same.  So I accept that this is just the way ZWH plays.  We just shouldn't pretend that he really follows the actual rules on serving.

I enjoy the game.  For the benefit of newer mytt members who may not be able to recognize an illegal serve, is it easy to see the point of contact here (one of many instances)  ... even going frame by frame?

ofcourse he get's an advantage with his serve that's the whole beginning of table tennis, starting with a hard to return serve. Like benfb said most pro's wil try to find the limits. I bet you guys don't play on a high level yourself and always blame the illegal serve if you lose to a player which might serve illegal just by the slightest margin. Getting too technical on the rules is not an art unlike the art of serving.

His hand looks cupped because his outer 2 fingers fingers are up (while his inner 2 fingers are out). His palm is close to flat in this awkward looking presentation. Photo courtesy of Glenn Randmer.

An EJ to a table tennis player is an equipment junkie. An ej to a mathematician is a standard basis vector.
