What do you do with the upper arm during the FH stroke?

I move it slightly forward (not upward) to help my forearm.

I think generally it shouldn't be going upwards but forwards? But the plane of forward movement is quite different between different players, some keep the upper arm closer to the body and some keep it farther away...
